For those with security alarms, panic buttons etc - do you advertise that you have them? In other words, do clients know you have security before they see you? Or don't you mention it at all?
I haven't got anything that will record potential attackers like CCTV, but I am going to have a panic button installed next week that links with the emergency services. If you advertise the security it may put off undesirables from contacting you in the first place :) Thoughts?

personally I think it's fine to say you have security measures in place (I sometimes lie and say I do - they won't know any different) but definitely do not tell anyone what the security measures are or where they are otherwise they can plan around it or prevent you using it

Occasionally, I get some weird message(s) asking "what's your setup is like. hotels and you'll be gone?" ::)

It can be a good idea to pop a security system sticker up in your window or on a visible shelf. I wouldn't feel the need to go into any explanation, perhaps if mentioned in conversation I'd say I take my safety seriously, have security measures in place.

I don't advertise or inform clients about my security measures, one of my self defence teachers is an ex male escort and he told me it's best not to let a client know how you can defend yourself. Clueing them in can mean they can act to subvert it.
If something goes wrong you actually want that element of surprise. Only had to pull it once on a client, most of the time they came in handy during my civvy dating life.

this is great! good idea! even you do not have it!
on my website and AW profile i mention that there are CCTV in my building.

It's a difficult balance, as you don't want to deter genuine, decent clients, but you also don't want the chancers to think you're an easy target. If I'm alone, I put a pair of men's shoes somewhere visible and have the TV on upstairs, for noise.

I have never worked anywhere that doesn't have CCTV, Luckily their is CCTV as they enter my building and on the street where I ask them to call me from and they just wouldn't get in unless there is a clear view of them.

I often tell clients & caller's that I don't stay the night at hotel as I get asked how late I'm working until.
I've also said I've moved rooms too

https://www.gov.uk/data-protection-your-business/using-cctv
"Data protection rules do not apply if you install a camera on your own home to protect it from burglary."
So you would not have to explicitly tell clients about it, but maybe put an FAQ to say "Will there be anyone else in your property? Can I feel safe?" and answer "I have several security measures in place for both your safety and mine. You won't see or hear anybody else during your booking." This should put off shady characters without giving them enough info to circumvent your security, as Mirror mentioned.

I think that having this security measure is one of the best things I have done in this job. If anyone is thinking about it I can thoroughly recommend AMCO security systems :)

Gypsy
I so wish I'd gotten a system BEFORE something happened to me, your recommend might help someone else.

Thank you Gypsy!!
Whatever the cost, I'll arrange a good security system. And I'll inform all clients that I'm not an easy prey. Better to prevent!
I was never really worried about my safety but recently I've been having a bad feeling and don't want to ignore it.
Yes, I was the same. Nothing happened, but I had this feeling I just couldn't ignore.
The alarm I had installed cost 650. And they charge 50 every 12 weeks for the monitoring cost :) The guy who installed it was really nice. It takes a day to set up. But it's so good! :)

What alarm system is this?

I had a camera fitted a few years ago outside my rented flat. If landlord asked it was because I have a dog walker, cleaner regularly and wanted to make sure the right people were coming into my flat at the right times and doing their job etc. Was sort of a lie but The landlord was fine about it and just said make good the area you attached it to outside front door when you leave.
It was only small. It sent screen shots of all movement at front door to mobile device and videod those moments.
I've seen maplins do a newer more modern kit now too.
When I move to a new place for work I'll be installing one.

You need to go on AMCO's website. Google AMCO security :) They were running an offer at the time of 100 off. They usually fit panic alarms in small businesses like corner shops but will happily fit one in your house that wires up to a usual house alarm. All you have to do is press your panic alarm, it takes about 10 seconds for the call to go through and they will ask you if you're okay, or listen in if you're not able to answer and they have the power to phone the police for you etc :)
