Ring doorbells on serviced apartments
« on: 10 August 2023, 02:34:12 pm »
Hiya hope everyone is well!!!
This is my first post so apologies in advance if this question has been answered already or the topic has been covered. I’m really really confused with ring doorbells and how (if possible) you can find out if serviced apartments have them fitted prior to booking and or there’s any way around this? I’ve worked out of hotels but there’s a very limited number that are discreet and was thinking about apartments as an alternative.
The only thing I could think to do was look at reviews etc of the apartments but they didn’t shed much light unfortunately.
I’m quite nervous about booking an apartment and then finding it’s got a ring doorbell. Can I ask for it to be disconnected? Have you ladies had any experiences with them?
Thank you in advance :) x

Can you contact the apartment company and ask about security arrangements? As a lone female traveller it shouldn't sound too odd and I used to often do this with hotels; ask about window locks and safes and suchlike as well, obviously.

Otherwise I'd just cover the thing with tape or whatever, but I've never seen one so I can't claim to know if that would work :)

Thanks Amy! Yeah it shouldn’t sound too suss really should it. I know the primary reason they have ring doorbells is to prevent too many guests eg parties etc. it just becomes frustrating when you know compared to some other tenants how discrete quiet and clean you are! I’ll try fishing a bit more and hopefully find somewhere suitable :) x

Yes some hotel/ apartment booking sites will have a section on what facilities they have. Like has cameras, doesn't have cameras etc.

You can always enquire , asking if they have cameras/ door camera as you like to feel safe. If they say no, and you want to book, email them and say actually although no cameras your property looks beautiful and location is ideal for my city break etc I'd still like to book.

Many door bells and cameras are wifi enabled so some girls just turn the wifi off! Personally I'd never do that as owner be suspicious!

Ring doorbells or any cctv or recordings devices need to be made clear on listing but some serviced apartments don't. This happened to me and I was really not happy. I did turn off WiFi and 3 hours later got messages from owners asking if I had WiFi. I replied yes and but knew they obvious was monitoring the ring camera. I did enough bookings to get money back and left early. Kept all messages on the site and then made a complaint to the company that the owners had not followed rules that states they need to list cctv, Which is what ring doorbells are. I had to leave early and made a claim for my money back because I felt my privacy was violated, Owners on my case about the doorbell and I didn't feel comfortable or welcome but what a big hassle.

Yeah id feel super nervous turning wifi off for that reason because it would arouse suspicion of the owner and I really wouldn’t want to deal that on top of work and potentially loosing money on a booking etc cos I usually like to do up to a week in a location to make it worthwhile.
Deffos a huge hassle but money back was win as they were clearly in the wrong!
I’ll ensure I make appropriate enquires before considering an apartment to cover myself.
Thank you so much for your advice xx

I had this happen to me before they had ring camera I didn’t know, client rung it and the guy comes round. I try my best to do research on apartment’s but can’t always see accurate pictures.

I have just turned up at an apartment today that has one of these ring doorbells. Am not working today. Am starting tomorrow.

The bell is on the main building outside. Unfortunately it looks like the other apartments are empty and they are all owned by the company. No way to buzz them in but luckily l am on the ground floor so easy to go and get the clients.

My plan tomorrow is to get the guys to call from outside the shop across the road then l will tell them where l am am once l see them from the window.

I will go out and stand in front of the ring door bell as if l am vaping. I will explain to the guy when he arrives that is what l am doing. That should block the view of the apartment owners seeing them. I have been assured those bells don’t pick up noise. Although l will ask the guys to walk in quietly. I will then have to repeat the same procedure when they leave.

I have made a habit of going in and out tonight with the vape so if they have been watching they will see l have already made a pattern of going out and in. Though l have not stood as close as to obscure view tonight. If their phone has been pinging tonight hopefully they will be fed up and mute it.

Am just glad that l have just booked this and the next lot of apartments for 2 nights at a time. A lot of extra work for me yes but in the long run that is only way to find out if a place is suitable for longer term use in the future.
I'm glad I got all the Cynthia Payne books before the prices rocked to sky high.

My ring doorbell picks up sound so conversation can be heard you will have to get clients to be quiet.

Sounds like a nightmare LOTM!
I stayed in a serviced apartment with an intercom that went straight through to the landlord! I didn't realise until several clients had already been. In the end I had to get them to wait by door, scoot down 5 floors in the lift, get them in, then take the lift back up! Landlord must have guessed as he blocked a future booking request  ;D

This is why I hate apartments. I would always contact them and find out whether they had ring doorbell.

I rented a place once and the guy knew what I did but one of the neighbours complained there was a prostitute working in the block because she had a ring doorbell. She threatened the police and everything.

It was my last day so I just kept working especially as the owner knew what I did.

Could have done without the hassle though!

Were you blocked through booking dot com as there is a place l keep trying to book and it always shows as unavailable.

My booking for that one was through Airbnb, he blocked me from booking again. I assume I could get reported to Airbnb and have my account closed - has this happened to anyone on here?
If your account still works on booking dot com then you've not been blocked. I see a lot of properties marked unavailable as they're on long term lets.
