Question for the IT whizzes...
« on: 17 June 2012, 06:54:31 pm »
Firstly I?m really sorry if this sounds stupid but I tried to find the answer myself and got even more confused than I was before so I thought I would try on here.

Can anyone who has a website please explain why there is such a discrepancy on the site?s ranking from day to day? I know traffic is obviously a major factor but I don?t get why there is such a fluctuation because my site traffic is pretty consistent.

The search I use is ?London Indian Escort?. I?ve gone from page 8, to 3, to 1 and then back down to 8 and now I?m on page 1 again. This is all in a space of a few days!  ???

I thought it was my settings (?) so I got a friend to do the search on her computer on Google and according to her today I?m on page 2.

Help anyone please?  :-\
(yes I admit I?m obsessed!)

I don't know how it happens but different PC/laptop systems bring up different sites when/if you put certain words into a search engine.  It can be the same site like Google and on my laptop certain sites come up top and on my son in laws PC with same search engine and same words then different sites come up.  No rhyme of reason as far as I can see - but it does happen.  Don't know anyway round it.

Doesn't answer your question but perhaps more of an explanation.

Thanks LL, I think I understand what you mean.
The thing is I?m only interested in Google and I thought surely the same keyword search would bring up the same results. Like I said I always use London Indian Escort so I can measure the site?s progress and I really can?t understand why it goes up and down like a tarts knickers.
I fear Google is a fickle lover... :(

I'm like you Alisha, im a technophobe. Can't understand why the same search words throw up different site on different aparatus but it does.

I'm so much of a technophobe I've got to wait till I go to visit my daughter and son in law next weekend to find out how to work an I-pad that I bought myself.   ::)  Thats what I'm up against.

I did a bit of a Google around to find out about site rankings (always best to search for tech-related answers in tech-related places :)) and found a few mentions of Google's Webmaster Tools. I then checked out the Webmaster Tools FAQs here: https://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1050724

There's a fair bit of info about checking/improving/fixing your site's ranking there. Further Googling is probably best for further queries!

Google the term "SEO" (search engine optimisation) to learn about the different factors that affect your search engine ranking which will explain it far more articulately than I can and also help you to ensure you have the knowledge to push your site as far up the ranks as possible and keep it there.
As Emily said, Google webmaster tools is well worth a read but bare in mind Google isn't the only search engine (much as they like to believe they are) so try reading through an unbiased site such as
http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo . This fab little site explains all the factors that affect your ranking and gives great tips on how to improve/sustain it's position.
Better still, check out www.SEOmoz.org/tools which has invaluable free crawl, link, keyword, search engine rank (for all the major search engines, not just google) tests. I've used it for non-escorting sites I've built and find it particularly handy for assessing whether "tweaks" I've made to a website have affected it in terms search engine ranking.

Hope this helps.

SEOmoz.org/tools

Oh yes - this is what I have installed on my laptop, which is currently having a kernel panic and needs taking to the doctors; I couldn't remember it and Googling "SEO" is a thankless task that I didn't quite feel up to. ;D When it first updated itself and opened a new tab in my browser to inform me of this, the page looked so hideous that I thought I'd gotten hacked. #funfact

Thank you Spangle for taking the time to write such a detailed response. I?ll give your link a try. I just want a quicker way of improving the ranking, I know new content helps but I swear if I have to keep this blogging rubbish up for much longer I?m going to crack!  :P

You don't need to spam blogposts or anything; one a week is fine (unless you're running an online magazine!). The key to SEO results is time as well as effort - this is a silly analogy, but it's like weight loss. If you eat an apple and then weigh yourself, and then immediately eat 10lbs of pasta and weigh yourself, and then have a wee and weigh yourself, the scale is probably going to give you 3 different results - but have those results really got anything to do with anything? No. Better to set a plan for the week, including a small caloric deficiency and a little exercise, and then only weigh yourself weekly so you can track the cumulative results which are much more meaningful. So do a little website work every week (new links, new content, new adverts, etc) and then check your analytics a week later to view the results of that previous week's efforts. :D

Twitter is the same. People will follow and unfollow for loads of reasons, but checking your follower count right after every tweet is just going to make you go mad for no reason. "Don't people like it when I use the word 'cheese'?! I lost TWO followers just then. Argh!" etc. Better to either A) ignore your follower numbers altogether because Twitter is fun but silly so just concentrate on having conversations you enjoy on there, or B) see what the overall trend is over a fortnight/month; if it's going up but you lost two followers after tweeting about gruyere, don't sweat it. If it's going down overall despite tweeting frantically about willies and fannies 24/7 and gaining a few followers who have dick pics as their avatars then maybe reassess your strategy. Day-to-day fluctuations in your web popularity won't tell you much.
