It really depends on how carefully you choose your flat as to how much people will notice. It also depends to some extent how many clients you are planning to see a day - obviously six is going to be more noticeable than one or two.

It's definitely worth going for a large, anonymous block where most people are out during the day and the entrance isn't too overlooked, and the walls aren't too thin. In the event that you were reported to your landlord I'm not sure what the exact laws are, but I'm pretty sure they can't throw you out on the street there and then.

If you do a forum search on 'neighbours' there are quite a few threads about it :).

Working at home has the advantages of being cheap and easy, with no wasted travelling etc, but there are all sorts of disadvantages to consider. As Amy said, if you have a look here, you'll find several discussions about it.

What would happen if the neighbours realised varies. If the place is yours, 'all' you really need to worry about is gossip. If you rent, then there will very probably be a 'immoral' clause in the lease and you risk having to find somewhere else to live.

If you do work from home, you want a cover story and to be prepared to move if necessary.

I have wondered about this myself - bearing in mind no laws are being broken, is there anything that neighbours within a block can do to actually force you out? My building has some sort of Resident's Committee (they have meetings about the general upkeep of the place and so on) which some people clearly take very seriously, and I would be interested to know if any 'policy' they had on people working from the flats was enforcable (I'm flannelling a bit because I'm sure I read something about it when I bought the place). I know they can't make you leave, but can they stop you working?

Having had a semi-serious threat of being outed recently, I'm making contingency plans  ;).

Hmm, I know there was a statement in my lease that said something about 'not using the flat for immoral purposes'.
I my opinion what i am doing is not immoral and everyones morals are different, but I do wonder if I am on shaky ground?

Fortunately most flats on the development are not owner occupied and most tennants don't care, my entrance is discreet and my foot traffic is not that high and my landlord is abroad.

I am actually really lucky.

Amongst the things I am not is a housing law expert :) You can talk to people who are by ringing Shelterline.

But :) if you are in a block, you will either be a leaseholder or, if it is a recent development, possibly have ownership in common. If it is the former, the lease will very probably have something to say about using it for immoral purposes, but enforcing it is up to whoever has the freehold. That is usually a company and you may or may not be a member of that company (you or a previous leaseholder of your place would probably have been asked for a pile of money to buy the freehold if so). If it is the latter, see first sentence :)

In any case, if you annoy the neighbours, what they can do is make your life difficult. Would your clients like being tutted at or photographed or having registration numbers being noted down on arrival? Probably not, which is why they are the sort of things annoyed neighbours do.

Yeah, but you're the nearest we got lol  ;).

Mine is a freehold with a limited company, which I am a member of along with a dozen or so others and I'm not too worried about that. As far as the rest goes and without giving too much away, the nature of my place means that actually photographing/making notes on cars would be very unlikely (I send clients to a busy public car park nearby and they walk from there) and if some idiot wanted to actually make a nuisance of himself in person he would have to stand right outside my flat door to do so, whereupon I would call the Police and report them for harrassment. Like Cassie, the entrance isn't overlooked and I don't have that many people visiting anyway.

All I can say is if the worst happens and they want an argument, I think they'll struggle a bit  ;D.
