Phishers targetting gmail
« on: 08 May 2008, 10:24:33 am »
I've had two messages over the last few days trying to get me to provide my gmail password (presumably, maybe other stuff too, I haven't clicked). They say that my email address is going to be blocked unless I re-authorise it. As with most phishing attempts, there's a link that appears to be for a page on the google domain, but if you hover over it and check the bar at the bottom of your browser you'll see it points to a different address.

Gmail has an option to automatically report phishing. Click the down arrow at the top right hand corner of the message for options.

I have been getting lots of fake bank account emails to my work email, and ebay ones as well

At least it is really good to know that the ebay / paypal security sytems are good for 3 rd party attempts on your account, they have been very helpful in providing IP addresses for for the Pc locations. Needed a crime reference number first though x

I was feeling a bit left out - the last 'relative of a dead African dictator' to email was months ago and they were so unconfident that they were even going to let me specify the split of the ill-gotten millions! - but this week I had an email about problems with my Google Adwords account, 'please log in to your account here or it will be stoped [sic]'.

I don't have one, and I'm sure Google can spell.

I'm getting about two a week and it's getting annoying since I have to open the message to report it.

I replied to a Nigerian scam recently! It wasn't the usual stuff, just a fairly short message about visiting me that was more coherent than some of the enquiries I get. I replied and got an email back about him sending me the fortune in a box and then renting a room from me!

They are a pain Anika, the phishing button is good on Hotmail and outlook. I really thought the old emails of my uncle owned a diamond mine, and could you send me some money blah blah were really a thing of the past x
