High rise apartments?
« on: 05 September 2013, 10:36:58 am »
I did a search, but nothing came up for this. I've had the chance to possibly take a flat within a high rise complex - I've been around the area and whilst it is within a local authority/'council' area, so is my current flat, and its about as 'rough' as my current place. There is lots of parking, and it seems like a nice area, no kids hanging about and what not. I've seen it in daytime hours and in night time hours. I've spoken to people who know the area, who state its a really nice place, there's never any trouble. One of my friends is moving into a neighbouring block and has done some of the legwork for me (she knows what I do ;D)!

There is CCTV within my current street as well as there are local authority/housing association flats peppered around. My current flat is just a bought ex local authority flat. Because its in a local authority area, there's still people wandering around etc, although there are a lot of employed people in the area. I generally work throughout daytime hours anyway, and NEVER past 9pm, unless its a regular client and it runs past then, so he would be leaving, not coming in at silly o clock and leaving 45 mins later. The CCTV aspect does concern me (aren't they usually on floors as well?) but then I think, if someone is staying for an hour plus, and its not all day every day, what are you going to accuse me of? Having friends visiting who happen to be men? There is a concierge, but based in another block.

I do not have a high amount of clients, I see about 15-20 a month, if that; I am very much part time compared to what I used to be, because of family commitments elsewhere. Because I've drastically reduced my working hours, obviously it has a knock on effect on my income, hence looking at cheaper options. I answer the door in normal clothes (ie a dress, not a PVC hotpant cat suit with fishnet stockings ;D) and I am extremely quiet. I have never, even in my wilder younger years, had a neighbour come downstairs to bang on my door complaining about noise. Most of my clients are one hour plus, and the majority are regulars as well as I'm so erratic its hard for me to pick up new clients in the meantime. I actually like being part time anyway, I've paid off the majority of my debts and I'm quite happy doing this as a job that gives me a lot of freedom in the meantime. There is a possibility I'm going back to uni anyway so I'm looking at things that take outgoings off - ?300 a month rent, for a place I can decorate myself and have as my own home, seems more appealing to me than keeping on paying someone else's mortgage at ?500 pcm when I can't make any modifications and know its not something more permanent. Its cheaper on council tax as well, and I would wager heating costs due to being higher up. Plus I'm of the opinion its safer as I get a view of EVERYTHING in the area, right now I'm kind of stuck in that department. Maybe I'm just getting old lol I want more roots.

I'm really just looking for other people's opinions on it for workability. Sorry its long, I've just kind of worked through it all myself mentally but obviously I'm involved in it and see more of the positives than negatives.

There are plenty of posts extolling the virtues of blocks of flats. I would say it all depends on the block, if it's full of retires concerned about their 'prestigous' investment then not a good idea, if mostly people who are out working or doing other things during the day or the hours you work then definitely suitable. One other thing to consider is parking, there are high rise blocks near me with no immediate parking, and some blocks of flats can have people hanging around outside, children playing in communal areas.

One other thing to remember is most people are not looking out for you.

Oh I know with flats, I've generally always worked from a flat because a) they're more plentiful and cheaper where I am and b) I don't like the idea of working from a house anyway. A high rise flat though... I was more concerned would people have stigmas attached etc? Or if anyone had worked from a high rise block as opposed to your typical tenement style block of flats.

I have had lots and lots of clients who have told me if they google mapped an escort's address before an appointment and it was a block of council/ex council flats they would cancel.
I also worked from a high rise block of flats in London (ex local authority in a nice area) and was constantly getting cancellations.
I definitely don't agree with their way of thinking and it's a shame a lot of them won't give these types of flats a chance as some can be lovely and very safe.
There's definitely a stigma though.
But that's not to say girls working from ex local flats can't make a good living as escorts. It really depends on the location, safe parking and discretion.

I worked from a high rise block for three years and I found it BY FAR the most discreet place to work.  I was actually working from the flat for over a year before one of the other people on the landing knew that I was in the flat and in no way did she suspect what I was up to.

The way I see it is, when entering a high rise block (these ones anyway) you could be going to any one of 45 different apartments.  In a closed close flat there are only maybe eight  to ten flats up the stairs and everyone knows everyone else's business - definitely not good IMO.  Then there is open landing where everyone can see who is entering your door - again not good IMO.  For whoring I wouldn't touch a house/bungalow/semi with a barge pole as they are all so obvious.

That's how it is in Scotland.  Don't know about other places.  People where I live are not looked down on just cause they live in high rise but I realise its different all over the UK.

Most blocks around here have nowhere like 45 apartments to an entrance, more like 4 or 5 ;D

Yes I've had the council flat assumption along with people trying to second guess my place and do believe it does cause cancellations, but whether they've got it right or wrong so long as I and those who don't jump to conclusions are happy it can't be helped.

I bought my old council flat years ago for what was a bank loan at the time( lol) mines a massionette and so corridors /walk ways are open   But you have no flats opposite plus mine is the first flat on my floor so its private ? In fact if I had to design a perfect working girl location then it would be just like my flat. As it really is in a perfect location to work from

In my bloc the cctv / cameras are  in the lifts and on the stairwells. But only on the ground floor near the lift
And as it has a  intercom /door opening system then there will normally be one in the door ( there is in mine) there is no on the walkways ect

I don't think I've ever had clients cancel because its a council block.   I give them the postcode of the cap park opposite which is new so they wouldn't exactly know where I am located anyway

I explain all positive things ie parking one min eeasy to get to as straight if the motorway into the car park and so know need to go ad park 5 streets away private and discrete  but to be fair there aren't that many really bad / no go area in Bristol ( well there are but nothing that I would be scared to go to)

Go ad look at the block its pretty easy to suss out where CCTV is and what it looks like

In flats they are normally right up in the corner pointing at the door and they are small sphere / globe like like a small football  You can't really miss them
In the lifts they are normally at the front inside at the top above where door shuts so if you stand with your back against the back of the lift and look up you will be able to see it.  You should be able to see the camera if you have reasonable eyesight

Also if it has a intercom check if you can open the door without them buzzing up most intercoms systems allow you to do this  check and see if the intercom has CCTV. Mine dose ( but I have my own as well )
If it dose its pretty easy to set it up on a non usable channel on your tv so tat you can see who your letting in

I also find yet hat because I keep them on phone as I'm directing to te block even if tey thought it was a dodgy block because your chatting to them they are reassured by this

All my clients aways say how nice and big my flat is and they are always surprised by the work I've ad done it

When I said 45 apartments, I meant the high rise blocks of flats.  There are normal tenement flats that have as few as 6 or 8 flats but IMO they are not discreet at all.  The high rise blocks are far more discreet and up here I had very few cancellations cause of where i was.

The lifts are going to be one issue to look at: if they're not always spotless and screamingly safe, you will get some people turning away.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

The flats I worked from were scrupulous and safe.  I never had a problem with flat or lifts.  Were maintained by a private company and cleaned DAILY, which showed.  I only moved cause I wanted a break and didnt want to have to keep on apartment when not working.
