Starting Out
« on: 06 June 2016, 07:29:25 am »
Dear Everyone,
This is my first post. I used to work for agency but got fed up with them taking a large part of the money so am going to try independent. Going to offer massage, tantric massage and extras. I'm going to use Gumtree, vivastreet, WeChat, Google+ and twitter to advertise, but I'm worried about finding a studio flat. I'm looking in Baker st / Edgeware Rd areas but don't know what to tell any estate agent what I do for a living plus I have no renting references - what should I say I do? Also, is there a part of London that is better / cheaper to rent than Baker St - such as Earls Court - that is still good. Sorry for so many questions - I am quit new to England. Any other advice for new person (I'm from China) staring out alone here?

Hi JB and welcome :)

I think you're making things difficult for yourself if you only advertise on 'mainstream' sites like Gumtree; maybe less so with Vivastreet but it's very expensive and like the others will likely swamp you with timewasters to the point where you'll feel like giving up. I can't imagine that Twitter will get you actual work unless you spend a ridiculous amount of time on it and Google+ can be a downright dangerous tool if you also have personal accounts on it and don't make sure all the privacy settings are on. I'd recommend having a look through the Adultwork section here - it's certainly not the be all and end all that some would have you believe but it's relatively cheap and will at least get you some bookings.

As for London, there are lots of areas cheaper than Baker Street and surrounds - don't think you have to be in Zone 1, either! There are threads scattered around about renting and you don't say whether you want to live and work from the same place, but if you'll struggle to get references or maybe a guarantor could you just do outcalls for a while until you get some financial records built up? If you can do a good massage you should do well anywhere - it's a popular service and definitely in demand :).

Dear Amy,
Thank you for taking the time to answer and for your advise. I need to live / work in same studio for a while at least. Will look at adultwork online.

Echoing amy, AdultWork is a great start. I've got a couple of decent regs through twitter and lots of one off bookings, but like Amy says it takes a fair bit of effort and time to build up a social media presence.  I find anywhere near the financial district to be very lucrative especially for same day bookings. Good luck!

Hey,

Baker Street is quite good, though a lot of girls around there now, so can be up and down. Be warned that school holidays reeeally effects work in London. I am worried now the summer holidays are starting. Very expensive to be tied to a flat if you not getting the work. Also you will have a lot of trouble getting a flat if you don't have references, and can show 2 years bank statements. I gave up and now just rent serviced apartments until I have my records. Maybe rent apartments for a week in different areas and see how you go. I work for 2 agencies and also do AW, Twitter. You have to put the work in with twitter though and I mainly use to to increase traffic to my website.

Good luck!

Ghostworld, the English school holidays don't start for approximately another six weeks yet. At the end of July.
Beauty is nothing to do with having a pretty face.
It is about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart,
And most importantly a beautiful soul.
