Hi girls, quick question... Do you include travel in your fee or is it an add on?

I travel quite a bit for work, and if I think it's worth it, I take it out of my own pocket. I believe I charge on the higher spectrum so feel I should have it included in the fee. However, this regular travel really burns a hole in your pocket, and travel I'm only doing because of them. When I do politely ask for travel expenses to be covered, I still feel cheeky asking and a bit fearful that this extra cost puts people off.

What do you do? What do you think I should do in this case?

I try to be as professional as possible and perhaps asking for travel isn't??

I think it depends where you are and what method of travel.

I drive and I include the travel up to 45 mins drive in my outcall price. If it's over 45 mins I'll agree an extra fee.

I live in the South West but I mainly get the train to London now, so it's a bit of a way! Most of my good clients are there from when I used to rent a place there. So I don't mind travelling to see them but to keep paying every time is a bit of a chunk x

I have always believed that if a client wants to see you, they will cover your costs.

Like you, am at the higher end price wise. I am also outcall only (London, zone 1), so my price is inclusive of travel. More often than not, particularly in winter/when the weather is bad, clients always add in extra money to cover my cabs. Totally unnecessary in my opinion, but they insist. (The beauty of only seeing regulars). Any travel outside of London zone 1 and overseas is always paid for by the client.

If you decide to start charging for travel, state it clearly in your ads.

I do the same, I will go quite a distance, I list examples on my profile but I always want to know the exact postcode before I confirm the fee. Quite a few will tell you it's such a town, but it's actually 10 or 20 minutes further which can on top of finding your way, parking etc really make a difference. I base my drive time on the time I know it takes.

I think it depends and you just need to make it clear in your advertising. So, say, you'll absorb a shortish cab ride/drive/train journey, but anything further there would be a surcharge.

When you say 'travelling for work' are you talking about travelling to individual outcalls (so a return journey per booking) or travelling to London to stay somewhere for a few days and see your clients there?

I charge more for outcalls anyway so that more than covers the actual travel costs and goes some way towards making up for bookings I might miss by being away from my flat, but I also have a minimum duration; I only accept outcalls to Zone 1 hotels anyway, but if I can't get to it in under 30 minutes then it's a two hour minimum or it isn't worth the effort - basically the booking time has to be longer than the travel time.

If this isn't practical because of the distance, could you use the opportunity to stay somewhere and do a few more bookings?

LillyX, think about changing your mindset of thinking it's cheeky to ask for travel. Your costs are your costs and as everything, especially train travel, isn't getting cheaper, it's your business so you can ask and expect it. If it puts off people, well, you aren't catering for everyone. I do get that it's a "risk" financially but surely the cost of feeling compromised and potentially out of pocket/less in pocket is worth the shift.

I'm not sure if other professions who travel regularly ask for travel on top or include in their fee - I'm thinking plumber/decorator/consultant. I don't think they travel for free at their own expense though. Why would they?

I am outcall only - Any distance within 30 miles of my address is charged at 1 rate, anything 30+ miles is charged at a higher rate to cover time & fuel - Locations that require what I would class as extensive travel (1 hour plus by car) also has a minimum duration applied to it as well
