One.com enquiry.?
« on: 08 September 2011, 08:53:01 pm »
Hello,

i am thinking of buysing a domaina nd web hosting package from a website called oen.com. It seems reasonably priced and straighforward.

Firstly has anyone used this site and is it any good?

Secondly, if I do this does this mean I am not protected by the  WHOIS search? Should I go to 123 reg first, but domain name  then use  at one.com. Or can i just purchase with one.com and go to 123 reg after?

Also one.com only allows one domain name for .uk or .com. So should i also buy the other one from 123?

I hope i am making sense and can somebody please help?

thanks

I use this company www.namesco.co.uk for all my domain buying and hosting. I haven't heard of the other but always helps to compare prices at least lol

hello,

Do you buy form there because they allow .xxx names? Something else that just occurred to me  does anyone know if web host people one.com will host adult websites? Haven't built the website yet but worried they may just shut it down if I did.

Also, my other main concern is really the whois search. Would  my domain be protected on a site like that or do i have to go elsewhere to protect it such as 123 reg?

I believe that when you buy a .com registration, you should have the option to purchase domain privacy at the same time. This will hide your WHOIS information from the public (Wiki article here). You should be able to easily see whether or not a domain registration company provides private registration during the purchase/checkout process, before actually handing any card details over, so if the option isn't there at the same time as choosing your domain, it's likely that they don't offer it.

Relatively few hosting companies allow adult websites. The best thing to do (with this query and the one about domain privacy) is email the domain registration and hosting company (or you can choose separate companies to do these two jobs and link the domain to the hosting afterwards) directly. That way, you'll also have their response in writing which might provide a little protection should they "forget" that they agreed to allow adult content or whatnot. This is very unlikely but I always do like to have a bit of written evidence for things, just in case. :)

(I just had a look at One.com and although it looks initially cheap, for your needs it will likely end up being very expensive. Better to pay a little more at outset in exchange for the peace of mind knowing your site will be safe, generally.)

(Oh, and also, we have a hosting company mentioned in our Recommendations article on the main SAAFE site, here: http://www.saafe.info/recomendations.htm)

Right in no particular order.

One.com's terms state
Quote
Illegal material is not permitted on any of One.com's servers, whether this be images, film cuts or hyperlink images or
suchlike material. Nor is it permitted to store erotic, pornographic or other offensive material on servers owned by
One.com. It is entirely One.com's decision to determine whether material belongs to one or more of the above
categories, and the company reserves the right to delete any such material at any time without notice. In the event of
such material being deleted the customer cannot advance any claim against One.com related to the deletion.

So I would be wary about using them for an escort site.
The same applies to any "free" hosting, most will not allow adult content.

XXX domains, personally I think they are a gimmick and would stick with .co.uk or .com

Many hosts will allow you to point more than one domain at a site, if they don't you can often forward the domain from where you register it.

You can usually register a domain somewhere else and have it point at where you host your site.

.co.uk domains have no privacy protection. at your risk you could register it in your working name and use a duff address, some ladies do that ok, you could find somebody who will let you use their details on your behalf, I know xw5's yourescortsite offers that but not sure if its just for people who buy their package, no doubt he will be here soon and can clarify that.

You can have .com privacy, godaddy and 123-reg who I use both offer that with no fuss costs about a fiver on top of the domain.

Sorry yes - I should have been clearer about exactly why it often turns out to be very expensive going with the cheap/free options, i.e. you end up having to go and pay for proper hosting anyway when the free option shuts down your site or offers terrible customer service or doesn't allow adult content etc etc! (Not to mention all the expensive extras they'll try to push on top of their "free" hosting, and hidden costs and all that. Like any "bargain", really, you have to be super-careful about what exactly you're getting and what exactly you're paying.)

I would have thought xw5 would be able to do just the domain registration sans hosting/building/design but yes, best check with him when he comes along. He handles all the technical stuff for yourescortsite.com and I mostly just redesign the site in varying shades of pink. :P

I've been with them for years long before there was any mention of .xxx but they know my site is adult as they are very keen to sell me .xxx lol but I'm not going too
