Old ?5 Notes
« on: 20 April 2017, 08:31:33 pm »
Hello all,

I couldn't find a topic on this already, so sorry if this has been asked before or if it's a daft question.

From what I understand; on the 5th of May the old paper ?5 notes aren't going to be legal tender so cannot be spent in shops etc.  The bank of England will be exchanging them for real money after this date, but does this mean I can still deposit them at my normal Barclays bank as with other notes or do I need to take them elsewhere?

If the latter, is anyone expecting any issues with receiving payment in old notes after the cut off date?  And other than reminding clients that old fivers won't be accepted as payment (if they can't be banked as normal) is there anything that can be done to prevent clients showing up to appointments with money you can't accept?

Googled it and after the 5th May the high street bank SHOULD take them from you but they don't have to,  the bank of England will always accept them.
From now if you are given an old fiver from a shop you can request they give you the new one instead.

Yep I saw that, just wondering if anyone knew what the exchange with the BoE would entail, and what other girls would do if a client rocked up with 20 old fivers to pay for a booking, presuming he doesn't have real money on his person instead.

I had something like this happen with 20s when they changed. I decided not to accept, he went to the cash machine and cut his appointment short.

If a man turned up for his booking with all or most notes which were no longer legal tender I would not go through with it, simple as that. Anyone with eyes and ears knows that the old notes are fading fast and after the cut off date they would not attempt to use them in a store so why try to dump them on us?

I happened to get two this week, and thought how manky they looked! They do seem to be disappearing quite quickly.
