Old ?20 notes

Hi ladies

Just wondering if anyone is still seeing any of the old 'Elgar' ?20 notes that stopped being issued a year last June/July. I accepted them for a short time afterwards, since I know most banks were still letting you pay them in. I was offered some of them the other week, and was a little wary of taking them so asked my client to obtain new notes. It did mean the appointment had to be cut short, but I was a little scared of having problems at the bank.

I have since asked and my bank will accept them if they are being paid into an account, they won't however exchange them and of course most shops won't touch them with a bargepole.

I've not seen one for about six months when it was mixed in amongst a two hour booking payment - I did mention they were no longer supposed to be used, but I didn't make a fuss since I've never any had any trouble paying them in at the bank and I bank virtually everything. I think it would be odd if somebody turned up with the complete fee in them after this long though and I think I'd do the same thing you did as regards requesting he change them for current notes.

They are no longer legal tender so you were right not to accept them!

No they're not, but banks will still accept them if you're paying them in so the odd one isn't a disaster. And the Bank of England will honour the face value of any genuine banknote it has issued, even if it's from before WW2 :D!
