Cards In The Telephone Boxes & Working In Central London
« on: 14 November 2011, 09:05:11 am »
Does anyone know what the current legal situation is with BT (and the cardboys/flats) which put cards in the phone boxes in and around Central/West London?

I know at one stage BT had to stop cutting the girls off because they had tried that but ended up having to reconnect everyone at a later date. But in saying that, they probably can do it now because they have probably changed the small print in the wording of their contracts. I'm also curious to know if the Police are still putting pressure on the card boys/girls and if they have "invented" any new laws/tactics to deter anyone from working in the area?

I was in South Kensington the other night and saw a block of 4 cards (which all belonged to just one woman). It was probably my timing as BT had probably recently cleared the boxes but I was just a little puzzled as South Ken/High Street Ken are fantastic areas to work from and it seemed a little odd to see the boxes so totally empty and only one girl advertising (and I was in the area for about 3 hours). It made me wonder if the Police/Council had been "cleaning" up the area and surrounding areas.

Adverts placed in phone boxes have been banned since 2001. Human trafficking, a component of modern prostitution, is also covered by the 1956 Sexual Offences Act.  There are also general laws on public nuisance and decency which can be used to target the sex trade, which can include these types of advertising cards.

Im sure other ladies here will have some more info on it.

Yep, carding is still illegal and although there's much less of it than there was, BT and Westminster council still hate it.

The Praed Street Project will know if the police are, in part as a result of pressure from the other two, still going around to places advertised on the cards and threatening to charge with aiding and abetting the carding offences. As far as I know, no-one ever was done for this, but I suspect it will be tried in the run up to the Olympics next year - Westminster really, really loathe it.

Once in a blue moon if I'm out and about any my phone battery is dead or if I haven't got my mobile I'll use them.
You're right, they aren't as popular as they used to be. And yes the ones in my area do rather smell of pee.

And they aren't even big red boxes, they are the glass BT phone boxes.

When /if I move to the city I'll consider them.
It's a quick way to reach tourists.

I used to own an interesting book on the subject:
Tart Cards: London's Illicit Advertising Art(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FVV2SSE2L._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

Downsides. Illegal since 1984 IIRC.
There was a one year break where it was legal.
Due to privatisation of BT
or split of BT from the Post Office. I can't remember which.
It took a while for legislation to get updated.
Councils regularly request the police to take actions to reduce the incidents of Carding.

Anecdotal
The biggest problem is this.
I have heard that use of Tart Cards is more often done by escorts
with no legal right to work in the UK,or possibly even be here in the UK.
Police with intelligence from uk border agency raid premises
where they suspect "Illegal's" are escorting.
If the raid produces no results or less than expected,
the police team will use these cards to go on a fishing trip.
If you are legal in the UK for escorting, then there is no legal problem.
It's just that a police raid can ruin your day.
Even if they say sorry and  smile when leaving.
Apparently escorts advertising 'Duos' get swept up in the same approach.
