Need some advice for prepaid cards
« on: 26 September 2014, 08:27:32 pm »
Hi all I've done a search for prepaid credit cards but still quite confused how it works.. Personally I don't have a problem showing my Id. when checking in hotels, but since I'm not a European and currently carrying a student visa, I don't want a lot of hotel bookings history on my bank statements just in case ukba will look into that when I'm extending my visa.

So my questions is can I register a prepaid card under a fake name? And when I book hotels will it be absolutely no trace with my real bank card? And any prepaid card advice or are they pretty much all the same? I'm thinking get a Prime card in a local store.

Thanks in advance ladies xx

Hi Cat
if you follow this link it will tell you about UK pre paid cards and how they are an anonymous way to pay, they have no name on them only an account number.

From what I've read you can use them online just like a credit card.

I am trying to order one online (from pockit) but they are asking for my name/ DOB. Do the details I enter matter if they are not going to ask for ID verification or can they take the money/ cancel the account if my details do not match up to one of a real person?

How will they know if you are a "real person" they are not to do a credit check on you as they aren't offering you credit you are applying for a card to store and spend your own money, I guess they have to ask a name address and dob to prove you are over 18 its the law. From what I have read are anonymous so if I wanted one I would apply for one in a fake name, fake dob but my real address.

I applied for one, after paying ?9.99 which I did by credit card only to then be charged a percentage fee for 'cash' transaction, they wanted me to send in proof of ID which had to match the name I wanted on the card. Since I couldn't do that I lost the ?9.99.

Given up on pre-paids, this was the second one I've applied for, first I did in my name but didn't have an easy loading facility. My intention was to use it for client deposits. I've now set up a simple bank account for that purpose, a lot easier than all that.

I use 2 prepaid cards, a ffrees visa card which I can load at any paypoint and a cashplus mastercard which I can load at the post office.
Both are made in my name and I got verified with the mastercard to be able to whidraw 500/day and load more money on it (not sure what the limit is, maybe 5k/year,maybe more, never asked).
Both cards are like any other bank card, easy to use online, abroad, etc.

I just bought one yesterday in a newsagent, was Prime prepaid card, didn't ask for Id or anything and when I register online didn't have any problems either just filled out a fake name and dob, and tested it today in tesco and costa easy to use, maybe it's different from the normal credit card after all cause you can only use it when there money in it.

I have both to ffrees is a 5000 limit for the year cashplus i had my limit lifted so i can use and load as much as i need to i tend to only use the moneyshop to load my cashplus as it is on my card within 15 min with the ffrees it is on your card as soon as it is loaded and your print out tells you how much you have on your card.  Only needed to send in id for cashplus as i wanted my limit lifted.

I think she wanted a pre pay that didn't identify her because of her student visa. If you don't register, you will have like a yearly limit of 500 - 300, and they will lift that limit if you register with your I.D. I believe this is to stop money laundering / fraud, so good chance the goverment have access to anyone who is registered. you would have to keep buying and deposing of the cards because hotels rooms cost hundreds of pounds.

I'm the OP herself lol, but damn I didn't realize the limit problem! This is frustrating I think the limit is 300 per top-up if not verified not sure about the yearly limit, oh I might consider getting new cards every time I hit the limit then..

For Ffrees, cashplus, tuxedo you do not need proof of id but you will only have a limit of 1500 or 2000 but ffrees is 5000.  The only time they ask for id is when you want to lift the limit.  the limit gets refreshed every year and you get a replacement card when the timespan of 2 - 4 years is over.  but no with the cards you order off the internet you your limit is higher. BUT NO ID IS NEEDED for registering and getting your initial card.
