Title: Need a new computer
Post by: Dexi Delite on 24 March 2013, 10:14:24 am
Ok, the computer I have at the moment seems to be on it's way out.  I've had it a fair few years and since becoming a wg it is on over 10 hours a day 5 to 7 days a week.  A majority of that time it is used for work purposes.  Having had a look at the tax relief for escorts site it isn't entirely clear as to whether I could buy a new one and claim it as expences, as the tax man could say that I use it for personal use as well.  Now, with my current computer this has been the case especially as I had it before I started working, but when this finally gives up to ghost if I don't replace it I will not be able to maintain my website, blog etc. as it is a vital part of my business.  I can only afford one computer, so getting a seperate lap top for work only isn't feasible.  So I just would like some thoughts as to where I stand regards being able to buy a new one and claim for it?

Many thanks
xx

Hi Dexi,
I'm definately planning on claiming on the computer I bought in the last financial year. Without it I wouldn't have my base income, and I would say the (way too many hours on fb) time I spend in personal use would be massively outweighed by its work use.

Have you thought of giving the tax dept a call and asking them? When ever I have called with questions I've found them pretty friendly and helpful.

Keep in mind that you could claim part of the cost of your new computer as work costs, if you felt it was unfair to declare it purely as a work machine.

I think you'll still be able to claim for a new laptop, even if you use it partly for recreational purposes. You just won't be able to claim the full cost. Your accountant can advise on you on exactly what percentage you can claim back.

Hi,

You CAN claim in FULL.

The reason being that personal use in your case would be termed 'Not significant'. This is due to the fact that you are not say purchasing a second laptop in order to work from home on a Friday because you feel like it etc. It does not need to be totally for business use as the simple fact it is necessary, is enough. Also you do not need to work out a percentage as with using rooms in say a flat you both live and work from.

You didn't say what problems your computer is showing, but may it be that it's just a software issue, and not a hardware one? Have you tried formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system? It might sort out the problems.

I've no idea what you've just said lol.  But we've got a geeky friend who built our last computer and he had a look and says it's on it's way out.

Yes, you can  ;D

I agree with Nobody Interesting that you can claim in full for a P.C.

My accountant put through the whole thing. I bought an IPad through my mobile service provider and claimed all the payments over 24months which included the 3G connection.

Ax

Ps I find a laptop much more useful for work
