Moving to London, Experiences?
« on: 27 November 2022, 03:17:13 pm »
I did do a search but can't see if this has been asked recently, has anyone moved to London to work from other UK areas in recent years and had good/bad experiences? I love the city and have always wanted to live there for a year at least, but I am worried about the increased cost of living, especially with things being as they are with oil prices etc

I would of course put my prices up to cover the excess but I worry about getting enough clientele, has anyone else done this? Any tips on making it work? I charge 160 now in a northern city, I do pretty well on that, I offer a lot of niche services, so I was thinking somewhere between 180-200 an hour. I don't know how easy that is to get in the big smoke over a sustained period. I'm OK with having a little less expendable income after rent etc,

I did, but I'd already been working here regularly (at least once a month, and in rotating areas so my regulars got used to it) for twelve years or so. I moved into my London flat in February 2020 which was either perfect or terrible timing, depending on how you look at it (I had no work for months like everybody else and very expensive rent to pay, but the hotels were unusable for a lot longer), and it was the best thing I ever did.

My main tip would be make sure you choose an area that you not only like but which suits the way you work - I work daytimes/office hours and prefer shorter incall bookings so the City suits me perfectly. Have you worked here much up to now? Bear in mind that your rent will likely be horrific, but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that! It can feel relentless though, especially if you're unwell and can't work or need a break and want a week off for whatever reason. I try to keep a 2-3 month cushion but it's not always easy.

I do find that I can work harder and do more bookings here just because the punters are so much easier to deal with (being around people who understand that time is money and have busy enough lives that they're not interested in messing prostitutes about for fun is a Godsend), but I probably don't have that much more disposable income than I did before after rent/bills, gym, travel and whatnot. My sanity is more important to me though :).

The limited experience I have of working in London is that yes the punters respect time, are on time, don't seem to feel the need to hang around by pushing boundaries and are very proactive regards actually getting to where ever you are. In short to quote a famous brand they 'Just do it'.

Oh thank you for the advice! I hadn't fully cottoned on about London clients being more efficient with their behaviour, but that sounds amazing to me, I'm really intolerant of even a bit of dragging stuff out so that will suit me nicely. I've been trying different areas, Wandsworth was good one time and bad another, Covent Garden was terrible, Earls court was good, I need to do a few more testing trips. My preference is for afternoon or early evening bookings too, and I like 45 mins/1 hour bookings best, so I guess similarly areas where there might be a lot of professional/working guys just able to nip out for a 'lunch'  or after work break would be ideal, so I'll look in to that. I can see that it would be hard to take much time off with extra cost of living, that's a bit of a worry, so its a good tip to always try and have a cushion. So far this since work I tend to get bored after 2-4 days off so hopefully should be OK.

Thanks for this! I'm still looking around at my options, but I keep hearing its generally busier on the outskirts of the city than bang in the middle.

I've decided to finally bite the bullet now I have a little excess savings to sustain me, and have been looking around at properties. Moving from a spacious 2 bed, 2 bath to a pokey 1 bedroom will be the biggest initial adjustment I think! But I can live with that. I've seen places in the East End, Islington and South West like Brixton that I like. I'd definitely stay away from places like Kensington/Covent Garden because of all the tours I've done in London those sort of places have been by far the most dire. You know you are ready for the move when the idea stops making you nervous and starts making you excited.

Well your first choices all sound pretty good - have you been down to view flats? The rental situation is horrific here at the moment but there are still a handful left :D

I think it depends how 'London' you want it to be; I'm very central and whilst I could stand being a little bit less so, any further out than Zone 2 and I wouldn't have bothered. I can live in a random suburb far cheaper in any other city in the land :)

I'm due to do the flat hunt in two weeks time, hopefully by keeping my net open wide I can find something suitable :) And I agree, I don't want to have to be travelling too much to get to the main bits of London or too far out, I want to be in an among it, so trying to balance being close enough to the throng of it whilst in a not too escort-saturated area or over-priced rent. It's a real balancing act for sure.
