Another vote for renting here. Save up a bit so you have 6 months' rent in the bank, and look for a small flat in a cheaper area that's still commutable to London - says Nottingham, Luton, Northants, West Midlands, Kent etc.

Renting is looking like the most realistic option so far, but in the meantime I will be checking out the forums on how to be discreet working from home.
