Job Type for HMRC and BANK
« on: 26 June 2012, 09:31:02 pm »
Hello all,
I wanted to know what is the "Type of Business"  for registering with HMRC as a self employed escort.
I also need to get a loan from my bank. I do have healthy bank account. I opened the bank account as a student. What I do I tell the bank my services are and if they wanted to know what types of clients I have, what do I tell them?
Many thanks for any help forthcoming.

Hi I declare myself as trading as 'Escort', and my bank also know this. On credit card forms I usually state 'Self-Employed' and they have never asked for further details. I am not sure how much detail is required for a bank loan. Whatever you do be consistent and don't commit fraud.

K, I've merged your thread with a virtually identical one from yesterday - if you do a search for words like 'occupation' you will find many, many more discussion on the subject.

Your bank don't need to know your occupation normally beyond your being self-employed, unless you go for a loan or something AFAIK. Mine do, but then I've no reason to lie to them (and since they helped me set up my pension and investment bits, it wouldn't benefit me to do so) but if you don't want to tell them then just make something up. It isn't an offence to tell your bank you're a masseuse, or a beautician or whatever. Tax evasion is a different story altogether.

sorry for it, i was looking for wrong words:)

Yes, so definitely I need to become self-employed.
I was thinking about masseuse,

on the other hand: I would love to say im a photographer,
but i dont think theyll belive im making so much money from it.

Do they need some kind of proof?
I must admit: I have no freaking idea how it works.  ;D

All they (HMRC) need to know is how much you've earned and how much you've spent on work-related expenses. There is lots of information on their website, but for good specific advice have a read through Jolyen's (revamped) site here :).

You could put Photographer, but unless you're planning on buying lots of camera gear which you could put through as expenses, you wouldn't really have anything to gain by doing so? How much you earn (unless it's completely pie in the sky, obviously) is nothing to do with anybody. Some photographers (and masseuses, and prostitutes) make a fortune, and some make bog all - there isn't a 'rule'.

They do need proof, which is what book keeping is for - write all your bookings down in a diary (with how long they were for and how much you got paid) and then write out everything you spent on work stuff and keep the receipts. Job done :D.

Thank you for the link.

Oh, but im going to be specialised in erotic and porn photography  8)

so besides travel and hotel expenses, i would put wigs, cloths and toys as well, I guess.
For sure, I need to read more, but at the moment im more and more enthusiastic about the whole thing.
And masseuse  still sounds ok...  probably it would be less complicated.

K, I told HMRC and that I?m an escort. They really don?t care as it?s not illegal and they?re getting your money. I prefer telling them the truth because it somehow legitimises what I do, means it?s treated as a business, and if anyone has a problem I can always tell them HMRC don?t so piss off. It also means I can put condoms, lube, work clothes, refreshments, car expenses (for outcalls) and part of my house expenses (for incalls) thought the books. My bank don?t know (I just say ?self employed?) and only once did they ask when I was banking cash one month, and I think that was just a keen new employee who though he had to ask. I just told him to ask HMRC (in other words ?none of your business!?) if they really had to know (which they didn?t). Anything else I?ve said I?m a ?therapist? as that covers a multitude of sins!

PoshTotty, Im scared I will have problems with getting visa to us, because of escorting.
Plus my parents cant find out or my future husband. And when u have it in official papers, there is always a risk. imo

Entirely up to you, but just make sure everything is consistent.

Alternative therapist is a common thing but obviously you cannot claim for things like condoms, lube etc.

I am very interested to know in what situations you have to disclose your actual profession other than to HMRC. Do you need disclose exact profession when say getting a mortgage, loan, car etc?

How would your future husband or parents find out? Do you mean just if they see your papers or is info somewhere for all to see?

EDIT- I just answered my own question by reading this http://www.taxrelief4escorts.co.uk/2012/04/06/do-i-have-to-describe-myself-as-an-escort/#comment-1090. Really informative thanks for the link!
