Job for jobcentre.
« on: 08 August 2012, 12:18:12 pm »
I now have enough savings to go legit, but am wondering what to tell Jobcentre when I sign off. Do I tell them Im an escort or say Im a Masseuse, Therapist or something. They know I dont drive so might wonder how I get equipment about and Im worried they ask for qualifications.

If you are intending signing off then they don't need to know anything. You will not be employed
by anyone other than yourself so the JC have nothing to do with what you do next.

If you are still worried that the JC will ask questions then simply stop signing. Your claim will be closed
within 2 weeks if you don't turn up to sign on.
You need to register as self employed though(whatever you decide to call your new occupation)
and if you don't then you run the risk of HMRC contacting you in time to ask what you are doing.

When you apply to be self employed you will be advised to continue your NI contributions which are
next to nothing in cost and you should receive a pack of information with lots of info but there is no
rush to do anything about it as you have ages before you need to submit any figures to Mr Taxman.

Anyone who knows more than me please tell me if I have got this right but I think I have.

I was surprised at that. How do you plan to declare 32 hours a week at your escort rate then? I imagine it would take
you way over the limit to claim working tax credits.  Again I could be wrong as I have not claimed WTC since being employed by a company before I was a wg.
I would not dream of applying for WTC as I earn a really good living and would consider it a little greedy.
Don't shout at me, I am only being honest here.

If I did 32 hours of escorting a week I would be in a coma and my bits would have fallen off.  If I do 10hrs I earn nicely and that is an extra good week!

No way would you be able to claim working credits if you are earning in the region of ?3-4k a week on 32hrs of escorting. Assuming she means something else.

Totally agree with this. And just because it's under a certain amount of hours does not mean you can still claim working tax credits when your earning over 100quid an hour! Lol

Now I am even more confused. In an earlier thread in July  "Glasgow Hotels" you said you were employed with a company badge.
But now you say you have been signing on.

Have I missed something vital here lol?

Yes you can apply for WTC if you work 32 hours a week but I think what you mean is that you are AVAILABLE for 32 hours, which is a huge different kettle of sardines compared to actually working 32 hours. To receive WTC you
need to actually work those hours.

Just checked can claim working tax credit when self employed and things like answering emails, advertising etc is included as part of your working hours.

Isn't WTC based on previous year's income?

Plus do they define those hours as hours you are actually paid for? I was once told you can claim some sort of benefit if you work less than 16 hours a week, thing is although a lot of us might only have between 5-15 hours actual paid contact I know I have enough income to live comfortable and it just wouldn't feel right claiming money from the government.

It's based on previous year's income, so they will take the figure from the JSA she was(is) claiming.

You have to work over 25 hours per week, and any money you make is averaged over the actual hours worked. Being self-employed, you might not actually receive any cash/payments for days, weeks or even months, but as long as you have been actively working (answering phones, marketing, advertising, networking etc) and payments DO come, then you're entitled to claim WTC for those hours worked.

BUT. They (the government) don't like people being self-employed and earning less than NMW, and next year's benefit reforms address this. If you're claiming you're working 40 hours and only receiving ?40, they will have you actively job seeking for your tax credits. From April 2013.
