Isit extortion?

Hi ladys
So I have a question. I’m working from a serviced apartment 3x a week , and the guy who owns it knows what I do. He’s fine with it . But he’s charging me over the odds . £170 per day , when I check on booking . Com the apartment is only £82 mid week 😑 .
I want to pull him on it , but not sure what I could say without pissing him off and eventually kicking me out … am I right in thinking it’s extortion what he’s doing?

It's not extortion as such but it's not right.   I wouldn't think there is a lot you can do to be honest as he doesn't have to rent to you and I suppose it's up to him how much he charges and if you pay it or not.  How does he know what you're doing there?  Can you rent somewhere else?

I would just say to him "I notice you're charging me per day twice what you're advertising on booking.com - unless you can reduce my rate, I won't be coming back"

He'd be pretty stupid to not reduce your rate. Guaranteed money from someone he knows isn't going to wreck his place.

Yep, whether you phrase it as a 'loyalty discount' or less politely, good tenants are worth keeping happy.

I wouldn't start threatening him with this - the police clearly no longer care about it and it could be used as the excuse for charging you more - but if he makes any comment about you doing something illegal, it's him committing an offence.

Sexual Offences Act 1956 s36: Tenant permitting premises to be used for prostitution. "It is an offence for the tenant or occupier of any premises knowingly to permit the whole or part of the premises to be used for the purposes of habitual prostitution."

If he sends you a message in the lines of “I know what you’re doing hence the reason I’m charging you double” and “if you don’t pay me that amount I’ll kick you out” that’s extorsion. Keep all comms with this douche, if you decide to escalate this issue you will need the evidence. If he tells you that then he’s committing a crime, basically he’s knowingly taking a fee from your prostitution activities in his premises and that’s a crime. What you’re doing is not. He’s the one who will be in trouble with the law, not you.

Yes it's extortion if he's threatening her but she made no indication that that was the case hence I said it isn't extortion. 

OP maybe could clarify it.

So you have some other good replies here.

I think when you approach him you should be nice about it - he doesn't have to rent to to you. But you have to be prepared to leave and go elsewhere.
You are the customer doing nothing wrong.

Whereas he is doing something wrong if he is deliberately charging you more because of your work.

It may be that he is willing to come down on the price to keep you as a regular booking, and you should approach him with the assumption that he will reduce the price.

He sounds like an opportunist dick.

He’s clearly making money out of you, just like a pimp would.

My advice? Find somewhere new to work.
