They may have a legitimate reason but if they're sincere then they'll find an opportunity to call.
Absolutely, it's also in their interest too. I've gotten a lot of clues about a person by speaking to them, and it's enabled me to dodge situations where there's more than one man, person is drunk or drugged. If I'd arranged it soley by text message, or email I'd have not picked that up.
There's a man local to me who's English is very poor, his text messages aren't too bad, they could be from a native speaker. When I've spoken to him it's obvious that we just wouldn't be able to get on in a room alone - we can't even talk about basics. I've declined him several times for this reason. If I'd not insisted on a phone call, I'd have just thought he was someone who wasn't very good at typing on a phone.
