Income protection
« on: 02 August 2016, 01:39:12 pm »
Hi all,

Do any of you have income protection insurance? So that if you get an illness or injury that leaves you unable to work for a while, you will get a payout after a certain period.

I'm not talking about health insurance, I'm happy with the NHS. Just to have a replacement income to pay the rent and bills if you can't work.

I'm not sure they'd cover sex work.

I have wondered the same thing!

I wonder if we could be covered as a massage therapist?

You could if you actually are a qualified professional maaasge therapist and that's all you are offering, the moment they did any checks if you made a claim and found out that sex work is involved the plan would be null and void as you had lied on a legal contract.

Yes, but it's down to insurance being an example of an 'utmost good faith' contract: you need to disclose everything that the insurer would take into account when deciding what, if any, premium to charge. That would include what you're actually doing.

The other problem is that they tend to be 'can't do any sort of work at all' policies, not 'can't do usual job' ones.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

Yes, I've looked into this a bit today and the best sort of policy has what's called "own occupation protection" which means that you're incapacitated for the job you normally do, not just any old job.

I've also worked in insurance for many years and believe me, insurers will use any reason to not pay out that they can find. So giving them false information about your work would mean you'd just given them your premiums for X months/years and can kiss goodbye to that money.

If the premiums are excessive then it makes more sense to just have a high-interest savings plan. I will update with what I find out.

I'm going to make some anonymous enquiries tomorrow by ringing brokers and just asking straight out if they cover sex work as a profession. I suspect the main problem is that they will consider it high risk, and as a result the premiums will be high.

This is a question I would love the answer to as well.

I have an amount of savings in a bank account to cover me should I get ill.  I have a great cover story for what I do as a job, due to another business that I am involved with, but I have always worried what kind of checks the insurance companies do when they pay out on a critical illness policy apart from the normal medical ones.  So if anyone knew this that would be really helpful for all of us.  I would love to have that kind of cover for peace of mind, having known people get cancer and be out of work for a couple of years until they get their health back.

It feels really unfair as most claims would be for conditions that couldn't be connected to our jobs, such as cancer.

I've had a mortgage for almost 3 years. My original mortgage adviser told me in order to take out the mortgage I'll need life insurance for the mortgage @ ?20/month so I did!
I've recently renewed my fixed rate insurance. Turns out I never needed that mortgage insurance!

I still have it though, ?20/month is nothing compared to what I'm... contributing towards the higher tax bracket.

I spoke to a broker on Weds and told him I was a sex worker and looking to protect my income. He said he'd have to contact several companies individually as he hasn't dealt with this before. He hasn't phoned me back as yet... We'll see what happens.

Don't tell anyone you're a sex worker, just say you're self employed cleaner, entertainment performer, therapist or something.
I told my financial adviser that I was a entertainment performer at the local spearmint rhino. I'm friends with one of the managers there who does...almost anything for me  ;D

Yeah sorry Emi but you're just throwing your premiums down the toilet if you lie about your profession and then have to make a claim.

I've worked in insurance for years, companies will seize on any excuse not to pay. This counts for any type of insurance BTW.

Hey VC!

Was there ever any progress on this subject?

Am seeking some sort of critical illness cover. Hadn?t anticipated there being any problem until reading this thread.
