I keep losing my voice

Hi girls, for the past few weeks my voice keeps disappearing intermittently, particularly just as I'm answering my phone to clients. It seems to be happening when I sing (well try to lol) & when I pitch my voice a bit higher, like when I'm answering calls. It's doing my head in a bit cos I don't know if clients can hear it (no-one has asked if I have a cold). I haven't got or had a cold or been ill or anything.

I've googled it and it mentions about polyps/nodules on your voicebox, but I'm very reluctant to go to the walk-in centre or docs as the past few ailments I've gone with, I've left feeling like a divvy lol. There was other symptoms for polyps that I don't have, so doubt its that, which is another reason why I don't really want to get it checked out.

Has anyone else had this? Is there anything u can do to help your voice come back? Oh I've also done no shouting recently & I don't smoke xx

PS Its putting me off answering my phone to clients aswell :-/

Hey, I know a fair amount about physiology due to my real life career ;-)

All you can do is steam with hot water morning and night and stop talking as much as poss. Please do not whisper, this will only make things worse. Also, don't bother with any over the counter medicines. Things will get better within a week or 2.

I doubt it is anything worse than a touch of laryngitis. Ask yourself if you have done anything which may have caused it - dusty environment, shouting, alcohol, smoking...

Thanks for the tips! :) I'll have a go with the steam. Although it's more for sore throats, I am drinking peppermint tea with honey aswell to see if that will work.

Shouting - no. I don't smoke & don't have any friends who do smoke, they're all on them e-cigs but they always go outside. Alcohol - no and I haven't drank for about a year. Dusty environments - nothing springs to mind.

Will try and speak as little as I can. Hopefully it'll be gone in a week or so :) xx

Yep know the feeling!  Apparently just by my normal speech my ENT specialist can HEAR I have a small nodule on the vocal cords. No big deal, but it means my voice intemittently comes and goes.  In my case it has done for 20 years.  If i have  been shouting or in the cold it will make it a bit loopy.  It will either screech and creak and come and go, or just go, for days.  Steam helps.  Honey helps.  Glycerine and blackcurrant pastilles seem to make the area more lubricated. Whispering does not help, but not speaking when you don't need to and wearing a scarf is brilliant. 
The funny thing is one of the major triggers can be during sex, if it gets particularly heavy breathey and intense or I get toraspy or shouty....off goes the voice ::)
 
Now there's a conundrum ??? ??? ???

I would strongly suggest to check this with your GP: you might have to be recommended to see a specialist and introduce a camera down your throat but ultimately this is for your own good......... besides lots of other things.

I come from a musical background too and when the situation was worse I would use an inhaler to open my lungs, omeprazole for the acidity in my stomach affecting me in other ways, syrup etc.

Ah yes, it could be acid reflux. (Heartburn in your sleep). I get it if I eat late at night.

Its not quite as bad now, but just coming & going a bitless frequently. I have been thinking aboutit since & I'm now wondering if its from when I playfully shout at my bf when he's annoying me (tickling me & whatnot). It seems to be happening less recently as I've told him it's his fault I keep losing my voice lol  ;) ;D

Hmmm, it may also be acid refux in my sleep (if that can happen when you're unaware?)
