Yes, the vaccine is a very good idea. I was going to buy it earlier this year but decided to wait for my smear.

What stopped me was I found some info online that said if you already had the cancer causing strain the injection can promote the cancer to start. I think this was on the Boots website.

I decided to have a think about it and see what my HPV test shows.

The vaccine is zero use if you have, or have ever had, the strains it covers.

As they've said, the assorted strains are very common. If you're old enough to have missed the start of vaccinating 13ish year old girls, you have probably had at least a couple of strains. Most of the time, the body gets rid of them.

Gardasil covers four strains though, which cause both cancer and warts, so even if you've caught one it would protect you against the other three (and possibly others).

I was vaccinated at school when they first started doing it, but I spoke to the nurse at my GUM clinic and he told me that a certain few strains were covered by that vaccine, and since they have updated the vaccine to cover more strains.

Does anyone know if it is possible get additional vaccinations to top up what you have already been covered for?

I'm in Australia, and yep you can get the Gardasil 9 vaccine here to top up from Gardasil 4 (which I received whilst at school) however you do have to pay for it (around $200 Au I think).

So I had my results back from my smear, and it showed up positive for hpv but I don't know what kind. What do I do now? Will this put a stop to my sex work career? Do I need to make my clients aware?

I keep reading that it's really common and what not, but I don't know how comfortable I feel about continuing and potentially put others at risk, but at the same time, I enjoy my job and I can't face going back to the normal drudge of 9to5. I offer a GFE with lots of French kissing which I enjoy, and it would feel weird to me to not offer that anymore.

What do you think I should do? I'm really not clued up on this and I don't know where I stand with telling clients etc

Try not to worry, I'd definitely chat with your doctor about what strain it is and what they recommend (in terms.of potential health concerns etc) and go from there...  I spoke with a nurse at my local health clinic about hpv and it's incredibly common - anyone who's had sex with 3 or more people will most likely have at least one strain, as there's over 100, so I certainly wouldn't be quitting sex work over it just yet!

In the UK Gardasil 9 is around £500 depending on which pharmacy you buy from, I'd ask about the top up they may only be able to offer the full 9 version but at least you'll have tried.

I've just had my smear and it's all clear. Now I've just bought Gardasil for £429. 3 injections over 6 months. I may have been exposed to HPV in the past, but as my smear is negative then I'll cross my fingers and get vaccinated anyway.

Gypsy: Is the vaccine effective even if you already caught HPV?
I am going to get a leep :( so a part of my cervix will be removed due to cin III hpv,
When I asked the surgeon he said that the vaccin won’t be effective as it’s too late. Have you got some informations?

No, if you've already had a serious strain of HPV then it's too late, but it's never been detected in my case. It's never shown up. I might have already got it, but so far nothing has shown up.

Yep, the trials were done - no benefit if you have ever had the relevant strains.

Because they are so common, the NHS doesn't test for it.

There was a thread about this not too long ago.
