I was speaking to a old friend of mine who has retired from the sex industry recently but was a sex worker for many years. She has throat cancer now (never smoked and was reasonably healthy) and she says it was caused by doing OWO for a long period with lots of different men and the HPV virus that you pick up from OWO.

She said she never thought too much about the risks of OWO apart from picking up the odd STI that antibiotics could sort out (she caught 3 STI's from her entire working 10 years of working) Obviously she has deep regrets now about what she offered and wish she could turn the clock back so not only very ill but she is suffering from really bad depression.

Does anybody else worry about this or even think about this ever? Obviously many people will get different forms of cancer in there life no matter what they do and even if very healthy but it seems so messed up that something you did in sex work can impact you after you leave the industry behind just seems so unfair that she left it behind was starting a new career and this happened.

Yes throat and cervical cancer is linked to a variety of strains of HPV, which is why some people including myself have decided to obtain the HPV vaccine. Most adult age groups have to pay for this, it's not cheap at £500-£600 but some deem it worth it.

Might be worth looking up HPV and Gardasil.

That is a good idea mirror.

Do you contact a private clinic that does this? I am assuming it might be a yearly vaccine?

I have heard about throat cancer from oral sex only very recently, even though iv been in the sex industry for 5 years it’s not something iv been aware of so it’s great that you’re bringing this to light for people.
It’s very sad that your friend has resulted in getting cancer and could most likely be from OWO, I suppose there are a lot of risks that can cause life threatening illnesses in many jobs but this is very unfortunate.

I am interested in the vaccine that has been mentioned and would like to hear more about it if anyone has any advice. Could I contact my local sex workers organisation perhaps, would they know more about it and where to get it from? I would be willing to pay even though it’s expensive.

Boots and other pharmacies are offering it, it's a course of 3 over I think 6 months. No annual booster. NHS website says 2nd dose 1 month after first, then 3rd 3 months after that.

Just search for the vaccine name and UK.

Mine was done at Lloyds, some Boots offer it some do not. Lloyd's was most convenient for me. If you choose Boots you can net Advantage Points which I did on the flu and pneumonia vaccines. Just searched seems Superdrug sell it too.

Bear in mind that most sexually active adults already have/have had HPV, there are many strains of it which mostly aren't affected by the vaccine and only a very few are actually linked to cancers of any kind including throat cancer (which is comparatively rare and overwhelmingly caused by smoking and drinking alcohol).

While it makes good copy, the vaccine is expensive and in light of the above, largely useless for people who have almost certainly had HPV of one sort or another and got rid of it all by themselves, which is why it's only routinely given to teenagers who (theoretically) haven't started yet.

You don't without a test, but you've almost certainly had it even if it's long gone. We're not doctors here so the best people to ask are the medical.professionals at your GUM or even your GP, or anybody else who isn't going to make money out of you having a vaccine that is unlikely to make a blind bit of difference. Do you smoke? :).

In my health authority area cervical screens (used to be called 'smears') rather than looking for abnormal cells, actually look for presence of the cancer-associate HPV variants, I have been clear of these for the last couple of screens so I have either had the variants and dealt with them or somehow not picked them up. This is the basis I decided to go ahead with the vaccine, plus someone very close to me was very enthusiastic having read an article on it completely independent/unknowing my intention. When I revealed the cost which I already was aware if, this person immediately volunteered to pay for it.

AFAIK most cervical screening now looks for HPV before anything else - mine certainly does. I'm maybe missing something but I'm not sure how that links to the quoted posts regarding sex work/OWO and throat cancer?

Yes i know with the smears they look for abnormal cells to look for signs of cervical cancer but what about the throat cancer will the vaccine prevent throat cancer if someone did loads of OWO for many years and never smoked.

I probably will bring it up next time i visit a GUM clinic and just ask there advice on HPV virus and the throat.

So mirror when you got your jabs did they tell you it protects all of the body the throat and vagina from developing all the strains of HPV and the one that could lead to throat cancer?  ?

Like Amy said it's mostly seems to be given to teens rather then older woman going by a quick search.

Yes, and the reason is because most sexually active adults have already had the virus and cleared it by themselves, which makes the vaccine pointless. As for older women, from the (admittedly limited) reading I've done over the years the people more at risk of developing HPV/oral sex related oral cancers are heterosexual men, and even then the rate amongst those who don't smoke or drink alcohol is vanishingly small.

AFAIK there's no specific way of testing for head & neck (which includes e.g. throat, larynx, pharynx, tongue) cancer risk from HPV, or even concluding 100 percent that a cancer is caused by it once you're diagnosed. But Gardasil (over Cervarix, which covers fewer HPV strains) will protect you, and the good thing is some countries are now immunising boys as well as girls. If I was under 25 I would definitely get Gardasil.

The other thing is HPV can take a loooonng time to clear. I had an abnormal smear in 2006 and wasn't discharged (after three colposcopies, two with biopsies) until 2013.
