I did book my first injection for tomorrow but then I cancelled it. I'm due my smear in October, so going to wait to see what the result of that is first. In my area they do HPV testing, so if it's all clear I'll start the injections then.

If you go with Boots you save 20 if you pay for all 3 in one go. I want to wait to see what my smear says before I pay 500.

Do Boots charge the full amount? Maybe check if your local GUM offers it cheaper. I'm outside their range range but get offered Hep B vaccinations when I let them know I'm in sex work.

I asked at my local GUM they didn't have any information or know anything about it. At the time (last year) they had a poster offering information about it being rolled out to gay men.

The impression I got from looking at Boots, Lloyds pharmacy  is that this is a commercial product from which they'll be making a profit or at least covering all their costs, I've bought the entire course.

I don't think any NHS GUM would offer it for a charge - could be wrong though. AFAIK NICE guidance doesn't cover older women, so the NHS wouldn't offer it. However, it's worth stressing that their guidance is based on cost-effectiveness, not biological activity. If I was under 45, I'd pay for it.

I asked at my SWs GUM and they said they wouldn't provide it or sell it to me that's why I chased it privately.

NHS is introducing HPV vaccination for men who have sex with men under 45. Admin cost in prisons for the 3 jabs is £10 per dose! Bit cheaper than Boots! :o

So all we need to do is change sex and get sent to prison? Count me in! :D

I caught genital warts about 30 years ago. The GP gave me some horrible very painful acid to burn the warts off, and said I would need a yearly smear test for the next 5 years.

My last smear test, the nurse asked me if I'd ever had any issues so I told her about it. She said nowadays they don't recommend yearly smear tests unless it's a particular strain. So it was in all probability a waste of my time.

So I had my results back from my smear, and it showed up positive for hpv but I don't know what kind. What do I do now? Will this put a stop to my sex work career? Do I need to make my clients aware?

I keep reading that it's really common and what not, but I don't know how comfortable I feel about continuing and potentially put others at risk, but at the same time, I enjoy my job and I can't face going back to the normal drudge of 9to5. I offer a GFE with lots of French kissing which I enjoy, and it would feel weird to me to not offer that anymore.

What do you think I should do? I'm really not clued up on this and I don't know where I stand with telling clients etc

I'm going for my smear on Friday.

HPV is REALLY common and your doctor should have said which strain of HPV it is and whether you'll be invited back for another test sooner rather than later to check whether you still have it.

The NHS says your immune system can clear the virus in time, so try not to panic and for now carry on as normal. It depends what you offer but this is why unprotected services can be so dangerous.

Best type in HPV on the NHS site  :)

Have another read of your letter, it should say if you have a strain that needs monitoring. There are only a few that are serious. Or you could speak to your doctor/nurse about your results.

I don't think you need to end your career. It's not like you've just been diagnosed with full blown AIDS.

Seeing as it is so common, this could happen to lots of women over the next few months and years. The new smear now checks for HPV before it checks for any cell changes although I think it may be being rolled out in some countries of the UK, they do it already like that where I am.

I would ask your doctor Jessie, they'll be able to explain if the letter isn't clear, no need to tell them anymore than they need to know.

Some NHS authorities text for the prescence of the cancer causing varieties of HPV, there are 100+ types of HPV many of which most people come into contact with during their lifetime. Some are fought off, some are not, some cause warts and cervical cancer. By testing for the strains associated with cancer, health care can then target treatment effectively. Many other people may have/have had the same virus pass through them, some may carry them without any knowledge or problems.

It's not over however you need to ask healthcare professionals what to do next.

By the way whilst on the topic the HPV vaccine Gardasil 9 is available to purchase privately, it protects against 9 strains of HPV and I have seen (although it may not be reliable) suggestion it can also prevent the cancerous type turning into cancer. I've bought the vaccine myself (warning it isn't cheap) from a leading high street pharmacy, which can be found by Googling the right words..................and am close to the end of the several injection vaccination course.

Loads of us have HPV. Your body will probably clear it naturally over the next couple of years, and you should be offered annual screening in the meantime to check it doesn't cause anything nasty. Just take the normal precautions and you'll be fine.

1 in 3 people have it, 90% have come in contact with it.

If every single escort went for a smear test, I’m pretty sure a very high percentage would have it, I’d be more surprised if they didn’t.

got my smear test next week... fingers crossed.
