She knew WHAT though? Has she got genital warts? Does she need a colposcopy or laser treatment?

Sorry, should have explained. She said she'd got genital warts several years ago and had several abnormal smears since. I think she got the warts lasered off.

If she had them "several years" ago, her immune system has very probably got rid of that strain of the virus and the strains linked to genital warts are not the same as the ones linked to cervical cancer.

You can - and nearly everyone does - have more than one strain at some point in your life.

It's possible to pay for Gardasil, the vaccine that protects against the genital wart pair as well as the two main cervical cancer pair. Given that you've been sexual with other people, it's extremely likely you've got / had at least one strain and if you've already got / had them, it's a waste of money as you wouldn't get any benefit. (And the makers very definitely did the clinical trials in the hope that you would: when it arrived, it and the 'cervical cancer pair only' equivalent from another firm were the most expensive vaccines ever.)

Sex workers can get Gardasil free, in Scotland for sure. Regardless of age.

I've never heard of Gardasil. I'll look into it. I'm going into the GUM clinic tomorrow and I'll see what they say x

You can have abnormal smears for a few years, as your body can take that long to clear it, and yet you may not need laser treatment. So long as she's going every year and they're keeping on top of it. But she's not 'contagious' in the sense of something like gonorrhoea or herpes, where you have active outbreaks.

Honestly, it would be a total non-issue for me unless someone had active genital warts.

I had genital warts and then abnormal smears for a few years when I was in my teens. It would never occur to me to tell a sexual partner about it, because it's in the past.

I think genital warts (herpes) never goes away. The virus stays in your system and you can have an outbreak at any time in the future. That’s why they say herpes is incurable. Some people are lucky and don’t have an outbreak but others have several.

Herpes is HS virus not HPV, and not warts.

I don't know where to post this, but I think it's definitely worth mentioning that Boots offer this vaccine to anyone up to the age of 44.

There are 3 vaccinations in total - £165.00 each, but considering our job it is WELL worth it in my opinion.

It won't offer protection to those who have already been infected with a cancerous strain - there are over a 100 types of the virus, but HPV can cause a lot of different cancers, so I think if you can afford it it's well worth doing for the future.

Sign up for it via their website.

Based on their pricing of other stuff, Boots are unlikely to be the cheapest for this.

It's also pointless for anyone who already has the strains of HPV it helps protect against - and they won't test that before selling it to you. If you have had unprotected intercourse with almost anyone who had done it with someone else, you may well already do so.

See elsewhere here for the reality behind the scare marketing of oral and anal cancer.

I'm getting this from Lloyds Pharmacy which is more accessible and cheaper - Boots are only offering it in certain stores which would create a longish all day type trip for me.

Boots is more expensive BUT you get Advantage points from it, which given the £500+ price tag could be worth it to some people.

I'm having the first of the 3 injections next week, I'm at the top end of the age range but my last two cervical spear HPV screens didn't detect any cancerous HPV strains and I use condoms for all intercourse personal life included. The articles in the media are very strong on effectiveness so I consider it I'm a good candidate, worth the £400+ price tag.

Is it Gardasil or Cervarix? If I was under 45 I'd definitely pay for Gardasil. Most people won't know what strains they've been exposed to, and you never know what you'll meet next, so as someone who's been through a minor cervical cancer scare, I'm all for it. HPV also causes a fair proportion of head and neck cancers.
