How to furnish an apartment to work?
« on: 04 January 2023, 06:37:47 pm »

I recently got an apartment so I can work quietly since I don't have plans to tour for a long time and I want to settle down. The apartment I got has no furniture, so I have to buy all of it myself.

Fortunately the kitchen is fully equipped, but I was thinking that, apart from different sets of sheets and towels, I will need a couple of chairs, a table and maybe a couple of nightstands and maybe some shelves. But I can't think of anything else right now.

Suggestions and advice are appreciated. :D
My question is, what type of bed is the quietest to avoid being too noisy?
Where can I get sheets and towels at a good price?
Apart from ikea, what other places do you recommend to get furniture at a good price?

Maybe a rail to hang clothes, or you can buy over the door hooks really cheaply which will hang lots of items. Also a full length mirror and a rug come in handy!
If you have carpet a wooden bed frame is cheapest and quiet (and you can fit those plastic under bed storage trays underneath), but if not then a divan is practically silent in my experience and is available with extra storage underneath.
Sheets, towels, furnishings and furniture are pretty cheap at Wilko, B&M, Dunelm and supermarkets, especially as the sales are on at the moment.
Good luck!

I would definitely go for a divan bed, more sturdy and no squeeking!

Divan bed with storage drawer and no headboard is the best for quietness IME.

I buy sheets, pillows and towels for work from a website just called "The Towel Shop" - free delivery and the quality is decent.

For duvet covers I usually pick patterned ones with a decent thread count, I often get them from Wayfair but also Dunelm Mills, the Range and Argos can be useful. The patterns can help cover up lubey handprints etc. I try to pick ones that are reversible so I get twice the use before needing to wash them.

As per a PP, FB marketplace can be really good for furniture.

I buy oversized fitted sheets with pillowcases from Wilko and use them to cover the bed with a throw over the top - they're cheap and wash/dry quickly. I have two mattress protecters underneath which I got on Amazon (I think).

Is the flat a studio or do you have a separate bedroom, and if so does this mean punters can be kept out of your living space? If you're going to have to let them in or through it I would buy drawers (or shelves that can have drawers in them like the good old Kallax - I have one with the big basket drawers) rather than open shelves as you're likely to want to put at least some personal stuff out of sight.

If you have space in the hallway/near the door I would get a coat stand (I'm not allowed to make holes in the walls but if you are you can just put up hooks) and a shoe rack; if punters see a shoe rack as soon as they come in they tend to take them off without being asked. My towels are from IKEA (my work flat is fully furnished and I still managed to spend £800 there when I moved in :D) and I got all sorts of oddbod bits from TK Maxx too - if you have one nearby it's definitely worth a look :).

I'd back up getting a divan, and one with storage drawers can be useful if space is in short supply.

britishwholesales dot co dot uk are good for bedding and towels. I'd buy a couple of washable 4.5 tog synthetic duvets, and make sure you use a mattress cover as well.

I'd scour charity shops for furniture. A nice chair is good for clients to sit on whilst putting their socks on etc., and for draping clothes over. Some sort of chest of drawers for clothes and supplies in the drawers and lube etc. on the top.

The British Heart Foundation can be good for picking up inexpensive furniture, and Amazon is probably easiest for delivering any soft furnishings you might need, although Wilko do nice large, soft throws that go well over beds (or at least they used to). I def would recommend a large standing mirror; they often pop quicker if they can see the action, and useful for taking selfies for private galleries and stuff in between bookings.

And a mirror is great for keeping an eye on them too!

Just don't do what I once did and forget it's there. A hotel I worked at many years ago had very reflective wardrobe doors alongside the bed, and I realised midway through a booking that I was yawning, looking bored and examining my cuticles in full view whilst doing doggy and thinking I was fine because I was facing away ;D.
