Can someone please tell me the law on this.
« on: 20 November 2011, 08:38:01 pm »
Hello Everybody,

I have already written something like this before i think but this time its a bit different although maybe along the same lines.

I work from a property that has a few girls working from although not on the same days. We all pay rent to the person who owns/runs the property although she is never seen as hardly ever comes to the property only to collect the rent which is left in a certain place.

Now this place has been raided once by the police a few years ago. I am just worried it may happen again one day and really wonder where i stand. I know it is not illegal to do what i am doing its just i have always worked from either my own property or hotels etc. I have never worked from somewhere that is ran by somebody else.

Now the lady who runs the place swears that if the police ever did raid again everything would be OK as she is completely legal. Is this possible, to run a legal brothel or work house as i suppose that is really what it is as it is not used for anything else, ie nobody actually lives there.

Any thoughts on this would be good.

Thanks.

Love N' Hugz.

Mak.

No, it's not legal - a brothel is a brothel is a brothel and running, managing or assisting in the management of one is an offence just as it has always been. I don't know where the lady in question gets her optimism from, but it's completely misplaced.

The worst you should have to worry about is losing a workplace if and when it gets closed down, but depending on what the local approach is I would be very careful about answering the phone, helping to organise anything (rotas or days, money collecting from others) and so on. It sounds like the flat is very much on the radar already but it's impossible to know whether it'll be left alone or not.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, that's what i thought, a brothel is a brothel, and she was trying to make me manager! Well that takes most of the heat off her.

She only boasts about it because she pays tax on it but obviously its not down as a brothel i wonder what she says it is? To her accountant anyway?

It has been open for a very long time as in properly 20 years that's what she says and it was the first place that i ever started at when i first started and i was 17, I'm now 29. Although i didn't know her i got the job through somebody else.

Yep, it's a brothel and you don't want to look to be in charge of anything should the police turn up.

There is a case where a brothel was known to the police for years, and when they finally decided to close it, the courts said 'Nah, by allowing it to stay open, you gave the expectation that it was ok'. Whether or not that would apply here, given there's been a raid in the past, I dunno.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

Please please please never have any involvement in running the place as you would get busted big time.

Involvement can mean your name on a lease
or gas bill, organising rotas,
paying the cleaner
or even supplying the condoms!

If you stay there or go anywhere else
At most, do your clients, pay for the room and,
er,
that's about it.

Hi, everybody,

Thanks for your replies. I think that because she has drilled it into my head that she is COMPLETELY legal i kind of lost sight of the fact that it is a brothel and all brothels are illegal. I think the police have litterally turned a blind eye to it, because most places have been closed down within months of opening. Maybe it is because she pays tax?

I'm thinking of going completely indie again even if it means working from home. I feel like she is trying to draw me into something that I'm completely out of my depth in. She tried to have me bank the 'rent' into her bank, hire and fire, collect money and run it up and down. I'm not comfortable with any of it at all. I'm not sure exactly why she wanted me to do all these thing as she has been doing it for so many years. Either she is just getting lazy or wants someone else to lay the blame on when things go wrong  :-[

The second one! I've worked for lots of lazy bosses over the years, I've never been encouraged to pay company money into my personal bank account though.......

I'm really bad at understanding what money laundering is, but... isn't that a bit like it? Getting someone to take your illegally-earned funds so that it gets sort-of 'lost' in the system and can't be traced by those pesky officials who seem to think you should stop committing crimes? ::) (This madam, obviously - not you, tiny!)

I think the idea was that xxxtinyxxx would be paying the money into Ms Brothel-owner's account, not xxxtinyxxx's, but even without that, you're being asked to step right into the path of any shit that may start flying.

If it has survived when most others have been closed, then something interesting is happening. She's kept to the local unwritten rules, and/or someone's getting a cut, and/or someone's a client, or... (If you know of many more, then closing them isn't a priority for the police: in South Kensington they said their target was closing one a quarter - given that there were a year's supply on the road I worked at alone, you can see how low a priority closing all of them was.)

But yes, the response to 'Please run this brothel, don't worry it's legal, honest' is either 'No' and 'What's in it for me?', depending on how much risk you want to take... and you already know the answer to that.

Hello Everybody!

Sorry didn't mean to confuse anyone, i meant physically go into the bank and pay it into her account.  Which is, a business account. Although I'm sure 'Brothel madam' isn't what the business is named in lol. But i would still be seen on the banks c.c.t.v so that would link me to the business as well. Umm...I don't think soooooo.....

My understanding is that if the Madam asked Tiny to pay the rent into HER OWN bank then got her to transfer the funds to the Madam's *hush hush* account, then THAT is laundering (which I think that's what you thought was being asked?)....whereas the Madam - if I understood the post correctly - asked Tiny to pay the rent into THE MADAM'S bank account, basically doing the Madam's banking for her.

Looks like the Madam was trying to PERSUADE Tiny to be the manager, which would put Tiny into a position of "controlling for gain" and "maid" and "brothel owner" and all the things that's illegal, so that if and when the place got busted, the Madam could turn round and say "Moi?? I had no idea, I was just letting Tiny rent the place from me"...

Yeah, I mis-read the banking thing. Even so, I think AT BEST the owner is covering her own arse - if the rent is paid into her account for her, she doesn't need to come near the place, and should shit go down, she's in the clear, whereas Tiny isn't.

I say at best, cos I'm a suspicious little thing. Were I in the situation, I'd be wondering what has been protecting Brothel Lady, and is it likely to end soon? (Copper due to retire??) Why does she suddenly need a fall guy, if she's got away with it for years?

She defo has somebody in her pocket because i cannot understand, when the place was raided there was a girl in there with a client. The girl was taken to the police station and interviewed. The madam was also interviewed. She walked. Now i know of another brothel that was raided and the madam was JAILED for keeping house...

The more i am thinking about my situation the more scared i am becoming. I'm better to cut my losses. The only thing is she is also my friend. But i suppose, how can she be my friend...You should hear the things i have been told that she has said about me. And the person who told me doesn't even know her. She knows her friend...Who needs enemies?....

My advice would be cut and run, and if she starts with the 'friends' crap, tell her it's because she's your bestest buddy in all the world that you want to end the business side of the relationship, and be just actual friends. Throw in a sob story about how you're after getting out of the job full stop. If she really is your friend, which I highly doubt in all honesty, she'll support you. Then once you are out of it, you can keep her around or dwindle her out, whatever suits you best. If she's really your friend, she'll send you VOs  ;D ;D
