Renting two places & the local council finding out
« on: 26 November 2011, 08:33:34 pm »
I'm living in a council house & thinking of renting a flat to work from.  I'm worried that if the council find out that I'm renting another place that they may have cause to evict me.  I've spent alot of money on my house & want to buy it eventually  to get on the property ladder so don't want to get on bad terms with the council. Will they have grounds to evict me or will it be ok if I put it on my tax records etc? I could be waving a red flag at a bull & don't want social services sniffing around either.

Also, if I do rent do I put my current address down or lie & put my previous one down? I did have a couple of clients who said they had properties that I could rent but surprise surprise they let me down.

I was always under the opinion that if you were given a Council or Housing Association flat that your income and means didn't matter as long as you are not trying to do some kind of benifit fraud.

One of my mothers friends was given a council flat over 20 years ago. At the time she was on a very low inccome etc. However now she is making upwards of 200k a year and has a buy to let. She has no issues at all as she pays her rent. She is however planning on moving out soon as she doesn't feel right getting such cheap rent when she can afford much more and others can't but that is just a personal thing.

What I would suggest you do id call up your council. You do not have to supply any details and give them your situation. They will be the best people to inform you what the deal is.

With regards to actually renting. I had a few working apartments in Ireland and always used my home address to register them with. I personally would say one should avoid trying to rent etc from clients as things can quite easily go tits up. Just my opinion though. Good luck x

Would only pose a problem if you were claiming housing benefit at either address. You will be liable for council tax for both places though.

I'm glad I got all the Cynthia Payne books before the prices rocked to sky high.

I'm registered as self employed but get child tax credits. If I did get a flat I would have to do more hours to cover the extra bills etc,  so my tax credits would be reduced. I'm not that keen on doing that at the moment & rental prices seem to be through the roof! A friend has suggested letting from a private landlord but I would have to lie to them about what I do for a living & it all seems like hassle.

I've heard that some girls pay 6months in advance & lose their deposits & rent when the landlords find out. If that happened to me I'd sue in a small claims court but then you have to think about using a property as a work place etc so I guess it's fingers crossed that no-one finds out.

The extra bills would be legitmate expenses, so shouldn't affect your tax credits too much even with the extra hours worked, although of course with a flat to work from you will be able to do more hours thus earning more etc etc.

As I said the best thing to do is call you local council anonymously and ask them. They have to give you answers x
