How much extra should I charge over Xmas?
« on: 25 December 2011, 05:36:27 pm »
Had a client call earlier to see if I was available but I said not untill tomorrow.  He said he'd call back but whether he will or not remains to be seen. I'm not sure what to charge him, however.  How long throughout xmas is it reasonable to charge extra and how much extra is acceptable.  Would adding an extra ?50 to my hourly rate be ok or should I charge more? and when after Xmas should this increase cease? Obviously (NYE) and New Years day should be a little extra.?  Don't want to lose potential clients by overpricing myself.

Hope you're all having a fab day girls and boys and Santa has been kind to you

xx

Personally, and I can only speak for me but I think Christmas Day is the only day extras should be added.

Everything else is back to normal on Boxing Day as in shops are open again etc so I cant see a client wanting to pay any extra and in my mind WOULD go elsewhere IF he was expected to pay more for the same services he could get somewhere else cheaper.

New Years Day the same as Christmas Day but not after New Years Day either.

Better to get something than to end up overcharging and getting nothing.

I don't see why any of it should be charged at a higher rate, to be honest - if you're prepared to work Christmas Day then you're saying it's just another day to you and doesn't have any real significance or meaning. If you're determined to go for more money I would agree with Linzi - Christmas Day you can probably get away with, but anything else is out and out taking the piss.  We're hardly scratching a living as it is and I think if you're obviously trying to squeeze people for whatever you can get they'll just resent it and go elsewhere.

New Years Eve is the 31st, and is an ordinary trading day. New Years Day is a bank holiday but unless you charge extra on other Bank Holidays too I would skip it - it's not a religious holiday or anything. If your normal rates aren't enough overall, maybe think about putting them up a bit?

Well good luck to them - of course we can all charge as we please. I (and I suspect a good few punters) personally think they're taking the piss, along with the taxi drivers round here who do exactly the same thing - if you want to work and are happy to, then work and if you don't and you're not, don't. Petrol doesn't suddenly go up at Christmas.

If I was a punter and saw somebody working who had put her rates up specially just because it was Christmas Day, I would assume it was because she'd rather not be doing it and would prefer to be somewhere else, and therefore the likelihood of a crap, disinterested service would be far higher. Nothing on God's earth would make me work Christmas and the money is irrelevant (and even if I wanted to I've eaten so much I'd be sick) but if I was going to it would be like any other day.

What they want to charge and what they get could be two very different things.

It is just another day except worse.  Sat here bored out of my brain, alone and did I mention bored!

I had someone ring for a job - then said he had no money and was just popping to cashpoint to get it.  Then spent 3 more calls saying that he was still on his way to the cash point.  Finally an hour late saying he had gone to the cashpoint, which he said was 2mins away.  Already convinced of his TW status I asked how much has he got out, (was supposed to be 330 for his booking).  The reply was "enough", then asked what I looked like. AGGGHHHHH.  That really takes the p***, a TW on Xmas day.  I subsequently have 15missed calls from him.  Have been turning off my phone intermittently to avoid him.

I don't see the point of raising rates. Glad to be out of the house IF there is a bone fide job from a non-drunk caller.

I had a chap yesterday try to persuade me to see him (I wasn't working yesterday, nor today). I explained I had plans involving family and friends, he then asked surely I could fit him in for half an hour. I said if I did there'd be a male friend arrive whilst we were together, and I was sure he wouldn't like that. He then went on (after saying he was tempted to book for Boxing Day) to ask me how much my charges were, and where I was based. Turns out I'm the other end of the large county from him.

Amazing how guys want to commit, without actually knowing pretty essential details. I did also get a call from someone obviously slurring their words, with sounds of another person in the background also ask for a visit initially denying they were drunk or that there were two of them. Until he asked my rates, once again both normal rate and that for 2 chaps.

They were quite trying. Thing is if you are going to accept a booking on a day most won't, then it's probably not going to be taking a chance on someone who obviously doesn't actually sound serious in the first place.

Many girls said previously they were going to work today ................ did anyone actually get a sensible person call with a booking coming from it?

I had commitments in the day but was free in the evening. Took my no. off AW so I wasn't unduly disturbed but had a couple of calls from guys that had  kept my number from previous attempts to book me. One of these turned into a booking.
I wasn't fussed about whether I worked or not so getting the booking was a bonus

Great, I had a few enquiries but I just wasnt shifting.  Few last night asking if I was working today then quite a few calls today (many of which I just didnt answer) but working on Christmas Day just aint for me.  Like yourself Mellow I don't have any committments tonight but I'll be back on Tuesday and that will be soon enough.

Glad you managed to hook the one in that you got Mellow.  Well done.

i had a booking with a reg tonight  (he offered- i didnt ask  to pay double)  if i would do an outcall  ( i rarely do outcalls to private home)    but i know him pretty well, so went for   for 2 hours at double my normal hourly  rate  and i do know that this particular client can easily afford it,  however i did feel a bit strange accepting so much money for the amount of time so ended up staying for 50 mins over  but it was no hardship as he is a nice regular guy and has an amazing house  and  i was quiet happy to get the grand tour of his house as well

if it hadnt been a regular client then i wouldnt have worked,   as going away tomorrow but it didnt interfere with my xmas plans  so didnt mind plus it was local so not far to drive either,
but with regards to charging extra cos its xmas day im not sure  i mean taxis charge more ect for xmas day ,bank holidays but to be honest i would probably just say i only do a min of 2 hours on these days rather than up my rates

surprisingly though  i found xmas eve to be really really busy though and  i was very surprised as it started early in the morning and went on into late evening for me with appointments
