How to make my work room nicer...
« on: 04 December 2009, 10:32:46 am »
I've moved to a fully furnished flat, i got my own mattress but the blinds in the flat are white and they really are see-thru but as they are drilled into the wall i cant change them so my first question is what can i use to cover the window up - it is only a small one so i thought about putting a poster over it but i'm not too sure.
Also the walls are really boring and it feels cold and plain, theres one photo hook so i could put a picture up I'm thinking some sort of canvas print, any ideas?
Really want to make the room feel warm and sexy and it just fells boring and cold

thanks

Lighting is one quick way to alter the feel of a room, of course.

When it's light outside, you don't need to worry about thin blind / curtains, especially if you are not on the ground floor, because it's hard to see inside the darker space of the room. When it's dark outside, though, the situation is reversed and you become much more visible. If you shine a light at the blinds, you solve that provided you do not inadvertently get between the light and the blinds and provide a shadow show :)

Great idea, I also found some 'twigs' in a pot in the lounge so ive stole some and put them in a wine cooler/vase and put them on the window sill so that should make it harder to see in (it is top foor anyway)

I need some sort of dimmer lamp then?

You could probably hang a bit of fabric over the blinds, but be careful about what you use. Someone in my student halls set her room on fire because she wanted pretty fabric instead of curtains.

Dimmers are nice, but you don't need one to get atmospheric lighting. Just turn the main light off and use a table lamp or a few strings of fairy lights.

I have vintage glamour and nudes and some pulp novel covers on my bedroom walls. They're fun and when I get a work flat I'm planning to put some up there.

Scented Candles and a lovely headboard will make it a sexier place to work. Make sure the candles are away from any curtains etc (common sense). I don't turn on the overhead light as I don't find it sexy in the slightest, although I have replaced the shade with a really nice one to bring the look of the room together a bit better. I use small table lamps. Personally, I don't like glitter lamps but everyone's taste is different isn't it.

Dress your bed with scatter cushions and a nice throw. Textures will make the room feel more appealing and inviting. Maybe little rugs next to either side of the bed. Makes life easier if you end up kneeling there - or your client does! Much easier to clean than the entire carpet too.

For the walls, I agree with Anika. I'd also put up a shelf to accomodate little sound system and a couple of cd's or even a vase of nice flowers.

I've also moved into a furnished flat so have been mooching for ideas over the past few weeks and buying bits and bobs. Remember that it'll come together eventually. Mine is beginning to reflect me and it's actually a lovely room to work in now!

Good Luck, Love Alex x

I like them, but not everyone does. Lava lamps take a while (30+ minutes) to warm up, while glitter lamps work almost from being turned on.

What everyone else said about the fabric/textiles - I have all sorts of drapes, throws and cushions as well as a canopy over the bed - if you can screw a few hooks/rings into the ceiling these are REALLY easy to make and look nice; just use some cheap tulle or voile that doesn't weigh too much.

B&Q have lots of cheap lamps and often have 3 for 2 offers on - you can also get these if you fancy candles but are a bit worried about safety (I have some of the larger ones and they're not bad at all  :D).

They look really nice thanks for the link.

I've found some really nice cushion covers in the pound shop there black & silver, just need the cushions for them.  Hopefully when the rooms nicer I will feel happier working.

My bed is silver metal so if i put fairy lights i would have to wrap it around the bars, would this look okay or do the wires look rubbish?

Green wires might not look good, but you can also get clear and various colours. I don't know what it's like in your part of the world, but Brighton has loads of shops selling fluffy and kitchy interior things and they sell all sorts of year-round fairy lights. You could also try www.lights4fun.co.uk (I've ordered battery-powered lights there), which states the cable colour for all their lights.

I use tealights in larger decorative glass containers or on large plates, unlike pillar candles you don't have to worry about the mess or them falling over and as long as they are on an even surface you don't have to worry too much about leaving them unattended for a short time.

To disguise the flex of fairy lights you can wind a pretty ribbon or a string of beads around with the lights.

I find to get nice and plump cushions are quite expensive, so if your pillows are starting to get a bit tired, replace them, wash your old ones and scrunch or cut them down to the size of your cushion covers. That way you can get a much plumper filling cheap. Or you can look out for cheap pillows on offer to use.

ikea do a gorgeous lamp which is a dimmer  its about 20 quid but it has for square  lights on it  which are really nice

ikea is also great for  pictures and frames
also wilkinson do really nice suede pictures  which are quite artry and abstract  you can get 3 large ones for about 20

and mirrors  men love mirrors so that they can watch themselves fucking

candles are great but remember to put them out

you could put some voille curtains over your blinds so that it looks nicer and more darker

and get 12 watt ligthbulbs to put in the main lights  nothing worse than bright lights
