Is the City of London busy at the moment ?

Hi
I was wondering if the City of London area is busy at the moment in this post covid time ? (Barbican, St Paul’s, Liverpool Street)

Well there's a lot more people about than there was even six months ago certainly - I'm having to step out of people's way to walk up Bishopsgate or Cannon Street now and that wasn't necessary then either. And Bank station on a Friday afternoon is back to being the delight it once was.

The queues in the sandwich and coffee shops are well and truly back too, and there were a lot of folk milling around the Monument on the afternoons last week but I think a lot of that was down to half term since children aren't people we see a lot of here. I saw a show at the Barbican a couple of weeks ago, and that was (deservedly) completely sold out.

There is definitely more footfall but no, it is nowhere near as busy as it was pre-pandemic. The occupancy rate is around 30% at the moment, and many offices are still return. I believe in the New Year it is expected to be much busier. I know that when I go to other parts of London, I am still taken aback by how much busier they are. The City, particularly at the weekend is still a bit of a ghost town.

But, not all parts of the City are equal, and don't forget Moorgate, there are definitely more people around there.

I know that some on this board who host incalls in this locale are busy, but I can't vouch for what busy means to them, and how much is new trade as opposed to regulars. Maybe advertise in advance and see if you get many pre-bookings?

The City at the weekend is busier now than I ever remember it being before - compared with ten/fifteen years ago it's heaving. Then again, that was when everything used to shut at 6.30pm on a Friday and not open again until Monday morning; M&S on Fenchurch Street even opens on a Saturday now and the bars near me still have people tumbling out the door at 1am :D

I don't think Natalya is asking about bookings, Miffy - she's been here more than long enough to know that me being busy/not busy at Monument or Flirty Flossie being busy/not busy at St Pauls or Dirty Doris being busy/not busy on Bishopsgate is a completely pointless question because it doesn"t make any difference to how busy she or anyone else would be there :).

I was pre-empting based on previous threads!

I've lived here for a long time, and I just don't think it is busy at the weekend, even Barbican for that matter. But, maybe I just have become blind to the masses, or maybe it's just my corner! I know Spitalfields was heaving yesterday, busiest I have seen it for months!

It's not busy compared with Oxford Street/Soho/Westminster, but compared to the days where you couldn't find a pub open on a Sunday unless you stayed near Liverpool Street station and you could walk up the middle of a main road on a Sunday lunchtime without worrying about anything hitting you it's positively lively IME :D.

I like the peace and quiet, but I don't work weekends anyway :).

Thank you for giving me these informations, I’m planning to work this week in the city (weekdays only), so I hope it’s gonna be ok. Knowing that most of my clients so far don’t live locally and usually travel to see me hopefully it shouldn’t affect me too much and if it’s bad then I just won’t come back to that area in the future  :)

I live and work in the city and Miffy described it pretty good. Half of those employees there are still working from home. What is true is that on the weekends we are starting to get a younger crowd partying in the area, it's become quite the "cool place to hang out on the weekend", however.. those youngsters are not my clients so no business from them. I believe that November-December the city is going to get much busier.

ana, completely agree, definitely a younger party crowd. The queues are back for the terrace at One New Change

I actually bumped an ex-colleague who knows a lot about occupancy and business rates, they said next year is more likely, and also many offices are now relocating altogether due to Brexit. They think it will take the City a good few years to recover and return to pre-pandemic levels of busyness. That said, Clerkenwell, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and everywhere else on the periphery of the Square Mile will continue to pick up incrementally on a week by week basis.
