How far is too far???

Me, AGAIN (im a pain in the arse i know!!)

2 questions

1.  How far would you drive/travel for a booking at your normal rate? 

2.  When would you start asking for travel costs?

How far you travel and how much/whether you charge is up to you! I am based in Scarborough, but have clients all over the country; they know that they need to book me well in advance so I can arrange transport and this makes train tickets cheaper and also gives me a chance to drum up any other nearby business that might be going, especially in London.

I have never charged travel expenses but do take deposits - Paypal, mobile top-ups or Amazon vouchers. In the last few months I have travelled to, amongst others, Southend, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Newcastle, Edinburgh and I am in London pretty regularly; I have just taken a booking for Glasgow in December (don't talk to me about carbon footprints!)

What I don't do is local outcalls outside my town (ie taxi/walking distance); the public transport here is rubbish and I don't drive! And I don't travel at all for short bookings.

Hmm, I'm putting on my site that I will travel up 30 miles and up to 100 miles for a small extra fee and go further for longer bookings and travel expenses. But I haven't decided what the small extra fee should be or how to charge travel expenses if I'm driving there. Though of charging something like 45p per mile, which is what my company paid for travel expenses.

The 45p a mile thing might just complicate it a bit though.  If i charge extra for travel im just going to discuss it with them when they book and jsut add an extra ?10/?15 for petrol or what ever i feel is likely to cover the extra expenditure i will be forking out.  Im lucky that i only have an old jelopy of a car that doesnt use much fuel so will never be too out of pocket.  I think also, because of where i live being a more touristy area rather than a business central i am willing to travel a little further than perhaps i would if i was in a big city so i doubt if the extra charge will ever really be put in to use unless i need to use trains, taxi's etc.


Amy (or anyone really)  how do you get deposits without giving out your personal details???

You don't need personal details to take mobile phone top-ups - they can buy the voucher and text you the code. Amazon vouchers are similar (email the code to your 'work' email). I have a Paypal merchant account so my personal details do not show when it is used but this is risky - Paypal disapprove of adult service providers (although it seems that selling the most repellent porn DVDs and so on is perfectly acceptable) and can fine you/freeze your account if they find you, so if you decide to go down this route, always keep your account empty - I only really use it for larger sums that wouldn't be appropriate for the other methods (?100 mobile top-up? :D).

Im an agency girl so rules might be a bit different for me but our policy is that there is a charge for any journey over 20 miles outside of the required ladies address. The charge depends on the journey length but i went to be booking approx 28 miles from my home a while ago and there was a 10 pound extra charge

I go by the time and distance it takes for me to get to my outcall. In Central London where the only cost is the price of an off-peak travel card, and it only takes an hour or so to get to the booking, then I don't charge anything. But if I have to travel anywhere for more than 90mins, then I balance it out by saying that my booking time has to be the same amount of time. I.e., a 90min booking for having to travel for 90mins one way; a 2hr booking if I had to travel for 2hrs one way. And if my fare cost me more than a tenner, I'd inform them at the time of booking that travelling costs would apply. For airport visits I charge a tenner for petrol. Customers never had a problem with that. As I say, you tell them at the time of booking, so they don't have any unpleasant suprises and they don't think you're trying to scam them out of more money.

When I first started and I didn't know any better I used to travel up to two hours for an hour's booking, and it was just silly. It would take a whole morning or afternoon, just for an hour, not to mention the getting ready beforehand. So now, for however long I have to travel one way, that's how long the minimum booking is.
It works for me.

My minimum is two hours, and for that I'm willing to travel about 90 minutes by public transport (which I state as one hour from Brighton, the extra half hour is for me to get to the station). I take all central London bookings without charging extra and in reality most of them probably take longer to get to, but I'm rubbish at working out travel times in London so I just deal with that.

Public transport is only for hotel bookings, for homes I use a driver. For that I go purely by what he charges: I'll go up to about ?45 before I ask my client to contribute towards his fees.

That's what I've settled on now, but when I started I was willing to go quite far for hotel bookings. I had plenty of free time and earned more from one bookings then I used to in a week, so spending a few hours traveling seemed reasonable.

thats what i figure.  I really want to make a go of it so I think its worth putting in the leg work now to get myself good feedback and a good reputation and i can be more fussy once im established.  I like driving in my little jalopy anyway so i wont mind a bit of a treck.  need a sat nav though as i cant find my way around exeter let alone further without one!!! lol
