How do you unwind and switch off
« on: 13 November 2016, 07:36:13 pm »
Im finding it harder to switch off these days. Im constantly checking emails etc and find it hard to sleep and switch off. I have a civvy job too and a family and juggling it all is gettin stressful. How do you girls turn off. Do you switch your mobiles off from a certain time and not go back online till the morning??  I take sleeping pills occasionally but dont want to rely on them xx

Yes you should turn the phone off. And then do something utterly not work related.

Just as with a civvie job you have to switch off and walk away, my work phone is on silent when I'm not working so its off after 4pm till 10am next morning and all over the weekend, if I look at it twice a day that's it. I find it very easy to ignore, I could work evenings and weekends but I choose not to and I find it really easy to switch off.

I put my work phone on silent and return emails when I'm working.

It took me a long time to switch off when I first started and at the moment I feel like I am constantly working. The few days I do have off aren't enough to switch off but on those days I catch up on home chores, gardening and programmes I have missed.

You need to engage yourself with others things and rest to keep a healthy balance which will help you sleep.

Let your clients have the sleepless nights thinking about when to next see you  ;)

I need to switch off big time. Ever since I've started to accept same day bookings, I feel like I'm call 18 hours a day  :-\

I'm exactly the same. I think I'm addicted to my job.. I really do love it, I think part of me worries that in years to come, I'll be unable to do this job and think argh I should have taken more bookings/made more money. Like even now, I've just done an exam online for uni and I'm laying in the bath replying to client texts and on this forum!

When I was working a really stressful civvy job that had me feeling like this (logging in to check emails on my day off, etc) I was seeing a counsellor and she recommended "when you're finished for the day, do something with your body that completely takes you out of the headspace." For example, go swimming, go to the gym, go for a fast walk. Spend time grooming my cat. Give myself a manicure. BUT the really important thing is that while doing these things, I should leave my work phone out of sight and either switched off or on silent. And if I'm doing a manicure, it shouldn't be in front of the computer where I'd be tempted to check emails.

It sounds like you finish quite late at night but could you maybe take a nice relaxing bath before bed, with a book or magazine (or Netflix on your iPad if you're me LOL)? Maybe 5 mins of meditation before bed would help as well - I downloaded an app called Stop, Breathe, Think recently and it guides you through loads of different meditations depending on if you're tired, stressed, anxious, or want to gain energy, etc.
And me, I am not a mess, I am a wilderness, yes

Really it's important to find balance, I come first and clients can wait. My phone goes off the moment i feel and i dont switch it on until the morning. I stop checking email before bed and then i shall check in the morning.

Working is not everything and maybe taking a bath or going to the gym, listening to audio book or something before sleeping?

Phone goes on silent and in my bag or drawer. If I'm not doing anything else I'll check aw but it is best to try to do other things once you've finished/on your days off. Burn out can come quickly, especially if you're never switching off.

Regarding the sleeping- this might be blindingly obvious, but don't have any caffeine  in the afternoon- it stays in the system for 8-14 hours!

When I'm not working or I finish for the day the work phone goes off, I check it in the morning when I wake up and it's mostly crap so it's not like I missed anything by tuning out for the day, just treat it like any other job after hours to go home and relax except you already are home.

Everything turns off for me, the onesie and slippers go on and I just watch a movie or listen to some music, sometimes my boyfriend comes over and I curl up with my head in his lap, you need times where you don't think about work or you go insane. It can be hard to relax and sleep after a long day where you've been having sex constantly and trying to keep upbeat and entertain but I think getting into the habit of shutting down everything and having some you time helps, make a hot drink or something that isn't coffee and just curl up somewhere. Don't check anything after hours. If people really want to get through to me if they can't call will often just send me an email that I can read the next day.

I don't do anything work related once I'm finished, including looking on here. X
