Hold Ups - keep ripping!!!! Any advice!
« on: 02 June 2008, 02:48:30 pm »
Hey all

I know this sounds funny but I serously go through millions of hold ups and it is driving me crazy!!!!

I tend to wear them more than stockings/suspenders but they just seem to blooming ladder so quickly.

I buy them from Boots/Debenhams/John Lewis/M & S - so I would have thought the quality is good but for goodness sake no sooner have I got them on and working then they are laddered!!!

It sounds so funny and it is I guess, but it flippin drives me mad as I am having to keep buying again and again.

So anyone have any recommended manufacturers I can buy from or shops!!!

Thanks girls

Wish you all a great week.

Love
Nell xx

I don't wear hold-ups but can't imagine that they are much different to stockings - have you tried putting them on with a sock over each hand (you can buy special gloves but this seems a bit unnecessary!) I'm terrible at putting them on but usually OK once they are in place, if laddering once they are on is the problem then I don't know; I have clicked a few good pairs by not being careful enough of client's watches and belt buckles! I often buy mine from Stockings HQ http://www.stockingshq.com/ which have lots of choice and are very reasonably priced (although I like Debenhams plain lace-top stockings at ?3.50) Hope this helps! :) x

I second StockingsHQ, it's great. My favourite everyday stockings on there are the Transpereze Sara ones, partly because at 20 denier they're a lot tougher then 10 and 15. They don't seen to do an equivalent in hold-ups, but there are some 20d hold-ups from other brands on there.

If you tend to rip them at the toes, make sure you're getting reinforced toes. If it's the heel, have a look at the RHT section.

You don't have to wear hold ups, nor do you have go to Primark (this is why I don't http://peopleandplanet.org/navid3791) I find my clients dislike hold ups and prefer either proper stockings or bare legs.

I remembered another tip for preventing ladders is to carry clear nail varnish with you and if you catch your stocking, dab a bit onto the little hole before it runs (now I'm showing my age; just realised I have been using this method for nearly 20 years!) Whilst it won't mend them as such at least it would get you through a booking (assuming the ladder happened beforethe client's arrival or jumping up to look for nail polish could kill the mood somewhat.)

Thanks girls

Actually this week I have suddenly got into stocking and suspenders - was not a great fan of the suspenders to be honest but got a new belt and feels comfortable and hey ho - guess what - the stockings have not laddered!!!!

Anyway - another question - and I sound like a real twat here but tell me something - is there a knack in doing up stockings - I seem to fiddle a bit with doing the one on at the back of the leg!!!

Gosh I sound like a stupid little girl but seriously I am a bit of a stocking novice as holds ups were my preferred choice but suddenly this week find that the stockings could be the thing for me from now on!!!

p.s - also any recommendations on nice suspender belts that sit nicely on the body please ? xxx

I like the deeper suspender belts because they don't 'cut in' to my belly (not look nice!) and find them much more comfortable - the six-strap ones are more reliable too. I buy lots of my underwear from What Katie Did http://www.whatkatiedid.com/ and would buy more still if they started doing some bigger bra cup sizes (grrr) - it depends a lot on whether you like this sort of look but it suits my age, shape and looks far better than more modern/skimpier underwear and is reasonably affordable (the corsets are great and really good value too!)

Fastening the stockings at the back can be faffy but I think finding a belt with decent (metal) clips solves a lot of problems and if you are really struggling with the suspenders pinging about just undo the belt part while you fix the back ones and put it back on after. I meant to say in my other reply but forgot; one of the other reasons I never wear holdups is because the sticky stuff around the top gives me a rash - I wondered if anyone else had found this? Even if I just threw on a pair to go shopping I would have a nasty red stripe around the top of each thigh within an hour - v attractive!

I usually wear the pull-on suspender belt from SHQ because it's comfortable and unfussy.

I don't think there's a knack to doing the clips, just that some people are more flexible than others. It might be that you don't need to reach as far back as you think though, just clip it where you can get it and see if it looks ok.

I've had minor irritation, but only after wearing them all day so I'm not sure if it's sensitivity to the silicone gum specifically. I know silicone allergy is widespread enough to be addressed though, because SHQ carries one or two styles with elastic instead, and markets them towards those who are allergic.
