Ok so i've had my Hep b jab done and had the last one of the course on monday.  They warned me on all occasions that my arm would feel bruised and it has but today it REALLY hurts.  like, REALLY painful.  the other jabs felt like a small woman had punched me in the arm but today i feel like a truck has hit it and its heavy and painful to move.  I did have a bit of a 'moment' when she did the jab where i felt a bit odd and they made me stick around for a while to make sure i was ok but thats nothing unusual for me where needles are concerned.  I usually go a bit funny from any injection or when i give blood but do you think its ok that it hurts SO much? 

Im pretty sure im being a bit of a hypocondriac about it but please can someone tell me they felt the same when they had it done.  I'm not quite ready to cut my arm off but i am ready to take a co-codomol (or whatever these hugely effective pain killers i have in my medi bag that i cant remember how long ive had or for what reason i have them) and if im about to take pain killers i know things aint good because i hate taking so much as paracetamol.  Anyone??? 

Sorry Lexie, I can't help you. I didn't get a Hep B shot because I'm paranoid about the ill effects of vaccinations.

On a serious note, I cant belive its dished out to kids in canada, thats mental.  Unless you think your child is going to end up as a gay, drug using prostitute that ends up in jail and shags around alot because thats who the site seem to think are likely to catch it.  Its not given to kids over here, not that i'm aware anyway.  Its generally given to people who are at risk of exposure such as the Police, hospital staff and of course prostitutes and its offered if you go for an sti screening and tell them that you are a sex worker.

I wouldnt imagine its really relevant to give to children but as an adult who is working in an industry where i could be exposed to it id rather suffer for a few days and whinge about my arm being poorly (even if i do sound pathetic lol)

I'm not a mum so have never really delved in to the topic of whether imunisation is a good or bad thing.  I think its pretty contraversial and i actually feel sorry for parents these days having to make that kind of decision.

Hep B is a serious thing to be concerned about. Lexie, I agree that yes in the states and Canada, nearly every kid that attended school since the 80's are mandatorily given the Hep vaccinations. Its not a matter of being a gay drug using prossie either. I nearly had a heart attack when someone I met had hepatitus B, but looking back at my records I was vaccinated awhile back ago...

Alot of older people in the states, however...who havent had their hep shots as kids are at risk, some get it...some dont. Its easier to catch and much more prevalent than HIV. And its unfortunent that the site seems to come off as only drug using prossie gays would be the only ones to catch such a disease...which is why unfortunently so many people continue to catch it.

If their was a vaccination for every single cough and sneeze out their, I'd take it!

I still dont think i would give it to kids, there is so much controvesy about all childhood immunisation and i think its probably best to leave this decision to be made in adulthood.  I mean the site did sort of suggest the gay, promiscuos prossie thing but in this country it is given and suggested more to those that would be exposed to it in their careers as i said, police, hospital workers, sex workers etc.  I think its something you catch specifically from bodily fluids which is why its so important for those people to have it.  Prevention is better than cure 'n all that.

Still, no one has told me if my arm is going to fall off on its own accord or if amputation is going to be necessary.

I'm not a doctor or anything, and I'm still waiting to get my hep B injections (appointment in January-eeek!)

Phone NHS direct or contact the clinic you got it if the pain isn't subsiding by today,
if you get any temperature, big rash, etc, I would go to doctors asap in case you may be having a reaction or something.
Most likely just some swelling though. I had the same thing a couple of years ago when I had a deep-muscle injection (Anti-D), so i know it hurts like hell!

Hi Lexie, relax I'm a nurse!!

So i can unpack my 'off to hospital for an amputation' bag then.  Thats good.

Its still bloody heavy today and the muscle is really hard but its pretty numb now so id say she just jabbed me too hard.  Im sure i will stop moaning about it in a few days or so.  I'm going around like a bloke with man flu.  Whats upsetting is there is no bruise so i dont think anyone belives me that it hurts so much    I'm such a wimp!

I had no problems at all with my hep B vaccination, but I was also offered a hep A vaccination, and that hurt like hell. I was in so much pain I didn't know what to do with myself. Apparently it's not usual to have such a reaction, but it stopped after about 4 hours, and I'm still alive several years later.

The recent discussion of STDs brought up a couple of questions for me, which I asked at my last clinic appointment. If anyone's interested, this is what I found out.

1. I asked if Hep B could be contracted via oral, and the answer was "yes, definitely". So, all those people out there who aren't vaccinated, do be careful! Apparently it's a horrid disease.

2. I asked if CIM increased the risk of catching STDs via oral without. The answer was that she couldn't quote any studies off the top of her head, but based on anecdotal evidence, yes it does make a difference. She much less often treats someone who's caught something just through pre-cum. Her theory was that ejaculation flushes the bad stuff out of his urethra and into your mouth. I've got a feeling that only applies to the bacterial ones, though. Don't viruses live in the fluid itself, rather than just being picked up by it?
