Hi I've just taken possession of a really nice flat however I have a nosey neighbour below , has made 3 non sexual references to noise, she can hear me walking about etc , it's a good flat , purpose built with lots of people coming going working etc .....however my nosey neighbour is below me and has commented on other 'noises' too ! I have confronted them nicely and also more formally , however I am a v quiet person and don't tend to listen to music or tv much, but I've tried to reduce the noise with carpeting etc ....washing machine is silent, so that's no good....what I need is some kind of music system that conceals noise of voices etc to a degree , but I don't want to play it loud just maybe something with a bit of bass ! I have an I pad that's 4g but I have no wifi there yet .....would some kind of surround sound help , speakers on floor ...I have no idea ! I don't think I can connect a beatbox thing to ipad without doing it via a connection...I only have a tv with music channels and a little radio at the moment ...it's voices conversations I want to conceal , my neighbour above me in my other place plays music that isn't loud but it's just a little bit 'Beaty' and that muffles sound , don't want to ask her though as she's just moved in and it'll look like I'm complaining and she's already said "let me know if you can hear my music" but I want to know for 'other' reasons ....any suggestions please ? The problems pretty bad had 3 'comments' in less than a week ....all done in a " I'm trying to be nice ( not) way ! Plus comments on my car being or not being there etc ! I've never worried about music for bookings before just background sound , ps I'm v mature quite techie wg but not clued up on sound systems at all xxx

I would have thought that bass music playing on floor speakers would be the last thing you'd want as bass travels and could be even more annoying to the woman underneath. Some people like her think they can live in flats and have no noise pollution from above or below but that's unrealistic thinking on her behalf.
How about some classical music? something light and airy and asking clients to take their shoes off when they enter? Explain they need to talk in hushed tones for discretions sake as the walls are very thin.
During the summer when my neighbour below is in her garden as its directly under my bedroom window. I have in the past put my hands over the mouths of clients who cum too loudly to shut them up, they don't seem to mind we have a giggle and it adds to the pantomime that is escorting.

Some people just like to moan and would find something to complain about even if you spent your life in silent prayer.

I remember living in an upstairs flat when younger and the neighbours used to knock up because my sister was laying on the carpet kicking her feet, these same neighbours had teenage boys who blared drum and bass all through the night.

If she doesn't like noise then why is she living in a flat?

I also wear slippers until the last minute to save the clip clop of my high heels when they are not needed, I only put my heels on when clients are coming up the stairs.

My heels sit by the door and I put them on as I wait by the peephole.

Put a telly on in the next room while the client is there.

thanks MH yes I've done the 'shove a pair of knickers in their mouth before' but I didn't really mean like actual bass I meant a sound that just disguises talking etc ...it feels like you can hear a bloody pin drop ..I meant more low sound ....lol , it's a real nightmare I really haven't added all the details ....I think he/ she is a fruit loop ! I know she put a note under door saying " I can hear everything" I confronted her and said if she's in dispute with a neighbour she'll have trouble selling ..plus I've bought rugs etc 400 quid to conceal noise but I think she's barmy ! Thanks so much for a reply it's really stressy .....it's easy to say ignore , but I think it's going to be a big problem ! I signed for 6 months so have five left and will look for somewhere else ...,.just don't know wether to work the arse out of it or take it steady...I know I'm older but in hotels 6/7 a day l.... Planning 2/3 in flat and weekends away , but think my hairs gonna fall out .......thanks for replying it's so kind xxx

I really feel your pain Guiltypleasure. I moved last year because the walls in my semi detached were thin as fuck. It got so bad I used to have panic attacks so I sold the semi a year later and bought a fully detached.

I totally agree with Caledonia and Helens comment - having a sound base/subwoofer will only make it worse and it does sound like the neighbour has a big phat ass stick up their ass  ;D

Your human so your going to have to make some sort of noise - they should be grateful you are not a family with little ones running around - and even if you were, what could they do? Come and tell you to tell the little ones to keep it down? That would be very retarded.

My suggestion would be to move elsewhere - either that or just stick it out and be yourself. No one needs or deserves dramas like that in their life

All the best hun

Ah Gracious thanks for your reply , I'm going to give it up at the end of six months and go some where else , I can't bloody believe it I had such a good ( or not ) checklist ....but you can't really ask ...is there someone below who never sleeps and listens for everything below ? Everyone else works in the day , if I get one knock on the door from anyone that she's reported me to I'm going to go mad and start playing music during the day , I'm not nasty but I'm a mouse sound wise ordinarily and think she should be relieved really , plus I'm not a "screamer" at all , the opposite more quiet and intense lol ....rrrrrrr ! Xxx

I totally sympathise with you GP. I moved in to what I thought was the perfect flat last year (having an endless check list!) but ended up having some "nothing better to do with his time" guy live directly opposite me and I also got some very odd comments and he somehow knew what I was up to.

My first instinct was to get the hell out of there but I was in a 12 month contract! I am now nearly 10 months in and not sure if I can run to the expense and hassle of moving again! Tbh he was funny at the very start but since then he's been fine with me - being pleasant if we ever see each other in the corridor etc... It also helps that it seems like he is moving - his flat went on the market about 6 months ago and is now sold so that makes me feel a bit better but what I did was cut down in the amount of time I was working at the flat. Work just 2 or 3 days a week max and then spend 2/3 days in a hotel. Obviously while at the flat I continue to be as discreet as possible and normally never see more than 2 or 3 a day there.

I shouldn't have to do this but made me feel more comfortable living there. Maybe you could try the same until the 6 months rolls round? Time does go very quick!

that sounds exactly the same Kate ...I can put the exact details on here but she's making a point of hearing me move about ( when alone) and comments about my car being there or not ? I'm pretty sure it was 6 months I signed , can't check now as not there at the moment .....but that's what I thought I'd do work in hotels too ...mainly weekends I think , plus it gives me a chance to 'vet' guys before I invite them to me , plus my other unworkable place due to the same problem and small area ( but my home) I've told hotel bookings it's unworkable and then they say "oh I'll be really quiet and bring power tools/ briefcase etc ....so maybe if I do it that way it gives the new ones the option of"come to my apartment and be quiet" or don't come lol .....not the smoothest scenario but some do do what their told especially my couple of Dom ones ...although I'll have to be bossy through my teeth , but that's ok I'm pretty good at whispering threats .....oh dear what a life lol ....perhaps we're neighbours lol. I reckon the woman upstairs works as I hear the bed or a trampoline go a few times a day and it's usually morning afternoon and early evening , not noisy and obviously doesn't bother me ...I just don't know who lives there , thanks Kate hope it continues ok for you xx

It sounds like she's one of those people who seem like they've been sent to annoy us lol. People like that need to find a hobby. In the past I've had issues with my neighbours and it can be awful if you don't feel comfortable in your home!
As others here have said; I'm not sure that a loud sound system is going to help you but to answer your question I connect my phone and tablet to my speaker via Bluetooth. I have playlists especially for work and I know when I hear a certain song it's time to wrap things up as their time is running out etc and playlists can be put together and changed easily. If you don't have a Bluetooth speaker you can get one for as cheap as ?20; mine was ?35 and it's amazing quality sound and goes a lot louder than I need, I've got one in my bedroom and one in my lounge and can connect them so they play my music all over the house. I don't have it loud but I'd rather have the neighbours hear faint music than my clients!
I really hope that you can settle in and don't have more issues, at least the worst case scenario is that you move in 5 months, which is better than having to wait 11 months!
