Help! Landlord threw us out!
« on: 06 June 2009, 12:30:25 pm »
Hi, I'm new here, please be kind...

me and my flatmate were told to move out by our landlord and we are desperate for a new place!
They say that too many blokes are coming in and out of our flat and neighbours are complaining.

What are we to do? We always kept quiet and there were never any noise or trouble..

Where can we look for new accommodation? Any tips from the more experienced girls here?

we're looking for a central London location near a tube station..

We're independent and want to stay that way.

Thanks for reading and any help

Kate xx

Check the terms of your lease. You cannot be evicted unless the lease says so and generally there will be a "termination clause".
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Welcome krazykate.
Your landlord can't just chuck you out. He needed to have gone through the proper channels by taking you to court to have you removed legally.
The problem is though, if it was you and your mate both working from the flat, you are commiting an offence as it then becomes a brothel, which is illegal. You need to be aware of that for the next place you do move into, if you're not already. And again, if you do move and the both of you are working out of the same flat, you'll encounter the same problem of neighbours complaining that there's too much traffic. Maybe you could consider doing seperate days to each other so you don't get too much traffic on some days.

Sorry I can't offer you any advice on where to move to next. All I can suggest is somewhere that doesn't have a doorman/concierge, a security entrance (i.e. to be buzzed in) would be good and somewhere busy enough that regular traffic will go unnoticed.

we were given notice to leave and told that we mustn't work in the meantime or the police will be called in!

The contract is in my name only, so I am at risk, and since I've never been in trouble with the police, just the thought terrifies me + having to reveal to my family about my chosen work, it's just unthinkable.

so we're now on borrowed time and without an income.

How/Where can I find a new place to live/work?
What can I do so that me and my flatmate can work together but within the law? (we're both independent)

Any help/tips would be much appreciated.

Several forums including this one have occasional property available adverts, you could also try posting wanted adverts on the same. Also local free ad papers, often carry adevrts for private landlords where if your paying cash, you will find quite a few willing to consider you

Unfortunatley because of the half baked laws in the UK, there is no legal way that two people can use the same place, and you were just unlucky, somewhere else you may have no problems at all

The police would've also been powerless to do anything because your landlord still would've needed to go through the proper legal channels to evict you. Neither they or your landlord could prove that you were breaking the law working together. But I understand how you must've felt when your landlord threatened you with the plod. You're terrified into compliance.

There is no way the both of you can work out of the same premises legally, so you'll encounter the same problems where-ever you move to. The law was supposed to have changed a couple of years ago to allow two ladies to work together in the same premises, if for nothing else other than for the sake of safety, but unfortunately it didn't happen, suprise suprise.

As Anjali says, feel free to post an ad in the seeking/offering forum on here.
