All domains have a whois entry, they're public and various sites allow people look up specific entires. It's supposed to tell you the name and address of the domain owner, but your host or webmaster has entered some generic details for you.

Thanks for that, just wanted to be sure it doesnt have home address etc on there........!  I get them on the visitor info at least weekly, sometimes more but maybe guys are just nosy!?

Usually via the people you registered the domain with. With the registrar I use, it's via an automatic system.

There are several 'gotchas' though: you can't change the registrant's name on a .uk domain without paying Nominet something, and if a domain really has lapsed, it may be harder to change the details without paying someone to re-register it - depending on the domain and how long it's been lapsed, this may be a pile of money and it may be better to just wait a bit for it to vanish (or, possibly, be squatted by someone if there are lots of links to it!)
