health checks
« on: 16 January 2012, 12:06:25 pm »
Recently gone to a new clinic and they seemed shocked when I told them I didn't know how many sexual partners I had had in the last 3 months lol.I am talking about the G.U.M clinic here.I always go every 3 months.I mean lets say average 3 a week,so had a rough figure but.....will never know exactly.I know I am always safe, but I also know that even condoms are not always 100 per cent, any how I like to know I am ok.Just felt like I was an unusual client at this clinic due to my work.I am not saying they were rude, just an eyebrow or two raised with some of the answers I gave.Has anyone else had a bad experience? and are there such a thing as sex workers clinics?maybe not a.Maybe I should avoid telling them anything in the future and just have the tests.

From speaking to staff at the clinic I attend I don't think they see, or at least have many patients admitting to being in the sex industry at all.

They have never been judgemental and always quite understanding. Regards asking how many partners you have, well if they know you are a sex worker then they should know to expect a vague or numerous answer. They usually ask me for rough estimates of regular:new client partners and go through the sort of contact I've had in the previous week.

There have been odd occasions when a health worker has been a bit excitedly nosy because they have a 'real live one', but generally staff are professional.

If someone made me feel uncomfortable at the clinic I'd make it known, obviously discretely but it is very important that sexual health clinics give the right impression to those using their services.

Yes, there are. There's a choice of them in London, for example. Sometimes it's a magic word that gets you seen quickly and - ideally - by someone with a clue, and sometimes it's a proper service.

Yes in most big cities there are.  I went to an ordinary GUM clinic initially and was upfront about what I did and they were always absolutely fine with me.  Only prob used to be the long waiting times as I could never get organised enough to make advance appointments.

Now I go to a dedicated SW clinic which makes things all round easier and quicker.

I'm unhappy.  I've been unable to get an appointment with my Gp, I don't know why I even bothered ::)

So my husband rang a GUM clinic and they asked for my name, address and phone number.  I wasn't able to meet that appointment so I rang a different clinic today (hoping they'd be more anonymous) only they asked for my NHS number!

What is going on?  Where can I find an anonymous clinic?

I'll attend the appointment anyway as I'm overdue, but still, I'm tired of attending clinics only to have to lie about my occupation  :-\

I don't know where you reside Eva, but I've never had a problem ever with GUM clinics.  I've always felt able to be open about what I do with the staff there.  Also in the clinic I went to initially in Glasgow they are perfectly happy if you want to use a false name too.
I do go now to a specialist WG clinic, but thats simply because theres little if no waiting time there!

If you don't live in a city, I can understand there might be a problem.

It is supposed to be confidential. I'm in a much more rural area and there is only one clinic, I have also seen at least one healthworker out shopping, in the street and she just walks past. My GP is also aware of my occupation too.

Suppose all depends on the level of exposure you are comfortable with.

Yes they use a separate database system to ensure confidentiality and your details would only be exposed in extreme circumstances i.e. the usual 'if you are a danger to yourself or others' kind of thing.

My clinic is great. They call us 'sunflower' girls, and there's a special fast track system for working girls. They've always been very professional and never judgemental x
