Ok so i have been pointed in the direction of various posts and most of the contents I understand about, but can someone tell me what an oyster card is as I have never heard of it before?

It's a London thing :)

It's a smartcard that can be loaded with a season ticket or used as a 'pay as you go' ticket. Extremely useful if you're in the London area.
