Going independent after bad agency experiences
« on: 11 August 2011, 05:42:47 pm »
I find the thought of going indie very overwhelming. But I suppose I just need to do more research!!

Start with the main SAAFE site and don't worry - if being indie were as tricky as it might look from the outside, there wouldn't be so many of us happily doing and enjoying it. :)

You've already learned the hardest, scariest lesson anyway (Don't Trust Anyone Who Wants Something From You!) so to be honest, now you probably have a bit of a head start when it comes to dealing with future weirdos, creeps and timewasters. You will have to deal with them, because we all do, but it sounds like you've got a really good idea already of how to listen to your gut and stick to your own boundaries.

The only other stuff that needs doing is a bit of admin: pictures (stay in control of all images of you, i.e. keep the copyright and all copies!), a profile on AW and a website plus a few adverts (plenty of free/cheap options for both). As I said, start with the main site because it will give you both an overview of what's involved, plus in-depth information on confirmation procedures, safety and vetting, etc.

You already show good instincts! Keep following them and I think you'll be absolutely fine as an Independent :)

Just by the way... Are there any more stories like mine that people would care to share? I could have immediately avoided an awkward and humiliating situati0n had i read something like this prior to attending interviews. xx

I've shared my negative agency experiences all over this forum! If you use the search form, with terms like "agency help", you'll find some of the existing topics that cover this subject.

Sounds familiar, I was approached by a guy on AW last year and he said his girls were earning a grand a night blah blah blah and he was so convincing, and I ended up meeting him in London hotel for an "interview" and I should of clocked on there was something fishy going on as he said he didnt advertise on websites but got business  by word of mouth from bouncers and  high end night clubs ??? and of course for me to get the job I would have to sleep with him to see how good I was and how worthy I would be of all that money I would be getting, I wish I had been more brave like you and told him "not thanks" but instead I just pegged it out when he got in the shower!

Glad your OK though xx

Yes I have...when I first started out 2 years ago, an escort agency (which i never actually found the name of, but was operating from disused warehouse on the north Circular road NW10) asked me to come work on the phones for ?50 a night. As I was new and hadn't yet had any clients I thouight I'd rather be working for ?50 a night than selling myself so agreed to a trial.
It was one of the scariest nights of my life and a real eye opener!!!
The guy running it was a disgusting, smelly, fat,  chain smoking Turk who treated the girlslike crap, shouting at them all the time. We spent the night driving round dropping the girls up and waiting and picking them up...and the way he treated them was just awful. After about 5 hours and back at base and only one girlleft on call for the rest of the night,he started trying it on with me and told me to go into the one of the rooms with him and show him what I could do, to see if he thought I'd be worth keeping on as an escort as well as on the phones. I told him the job really wasn't for me and I needed to get home and quickly made my escape.......he was very threatening, saying I'd let him down and he knew where I lived. Thank God that was the last I ever heard from him. It made me determinned that I would work for myself and not an agency!

I had this too! An agency owner wanted to sleep with me, to see if I was 'good enough' to be in his agency - what an absolute joke!

To be honest, I started off as agency represented, but quickly started to realise the perks of being an independent. You earn more, you're in charge of your own hours, you get to vet your own clients, and you can be ill without being shouted at. I worked with an agency for a year, and they would send me anywhere and everywhere, and to the dodgiest places ever! They are only interested in their commission. For example, when I was ill, they'd get annoyed and send me angry text messages, accusing me of losing them money. When I was diagnosed with clymidia, and had to take 4 days off for the antiobiotics, they wanted me to carry on working.  :-X I think I've just been unlucky, but honestly, being independent is so much better. I'm happier, more relaxed, and I don't rush about like a madwoman trying to get from job to job. I can book jobs sensibly, with an hour between them, and don't try to cram as many in as possible  ;D
