Girl harassed by police - Gatwick hotel
« on: 01 July 2014, 09:17:56 am »
Hello all

A warning and to ask if anyone has experienced similar.

A friend who works for an agency had a 1 hour booking at the Gatwick Sofitel last week. When she came out of the hotel she was stopped by the police, questioned and her bag & car searched. They said they were monitoring the Gatwick Hilton too - for trafficked girls. The story was odd as she was an English girl driving herself. The police said that had she been with a driver he would have been arrested.

Be careful at the Gatwick hotels ladies. Anyone had a similar experience? xx

I've moved this here, since the Warnings section isn't for discussion topics.

This seems very odd to me - given that the police had no way of being sure that the woman they stopped was a prostitute, are they just intercepting random people coming in and out of hotels on the off chance? Were these 'police officers' in uniform and carrying ID? What did they say were their grounds for stopping and searching her - there needs to be reasonable suspicion of an offence taking place?

I didn't know having a driver was an arrestable offence?

What about the warrent to search? It does seem a bit unfair they picked on her, unless they were actually observing the room she was in.

I don't think this would be keeping me away fro Gatwick Hotels as there are plenty of hotels and plenty of rooms.

I'd be interested to know why the police stopped this lady as she was doing nothing illegal or suspicious - as far as we are aware.

I was under the impression they had to have grounds for any of the things mentioned in the OP.

It is about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart,
And most importantly a beautiful soul.

I, and my driver, are stopped fairly regularly whilst we are driving at night by the police. This is because I am a nighttime escort, and random checks on cars are made routinely after sundown; meaning we get stopped a lot more than your average traveller.

I am always honest about working as an independent escort when asked by the police. They do ask my real name and home address, which I am happy to give them. However I have never been questioned any further than this, and have never, ever been told by the police that it is illegal to have a driver - because it isn't. I also have never had my bag checked, or had the car checked; I don't believe they could do this because they have no suspicion of an offence taking place.

I work in London and around Gatwick as well so I have direct experience of dealing with these particular (and in my experience very professional and knowledgeable) officers when they do occasionally pull me over.

So the OP all sounds very dodgy to me - either they weren't real officers, or they were genuinely police officers but had been given some quite serious hard evidence of trafficking not mentioned in the original post.

Hi all

Thanks for your contributions.
She left the Sofitel and the police pulled her over, they asked what she had been doing in the hotel for just an hour. They searched her car and her bag where they proceeded to find all her money and other things she carries around. They asked who she was seeing and the room number. They said they were already talking to the guy also. They asked what she was doing in the room with him and she said she was just visiting and giving him company for which he paid for. They told her they are monitoring the hotel as they are trying to crack down on trafficked girls. They also said if she had been with the agency driver he would have been arrested. The cars were marked and unmarked landrovers.

Yes its all very odd but that's how it was.
