So embarrassed - family has found out.
« on: 10 December 2011, 09:35:18 pm »
My family has found out that I'm a prostitute. And I see everyday in google analytis that they keep spending a lot of time on my website! They live is a far off obscure location, that's how I know it's them.

How did that hapen? Well, I had purchased my website address in my name and although I had opted out of the WHOIS, that only hides my address and contact details, but not my name! And some idiots have decided to broadcast my WHOIS, where my name is not hidded, into Google!

When I search on google for my real name and the town where I live, that damned WHOIS page which links my real name to my escort website comes up as the third result! I also have a rare real name, so whoever maks the search will know for sure it's me and not other!

God, I'm so embarrassed! What do I do about this? Anyone searching on google can find out, nut just my parents!

Ouch and oops.

You know someone from where they are know - could it be someone you were at school etc with? - but they haven't said anything. Do you want to come out to them?

From the sound of it, you have a .co.uk? You can change the contact details (and don't trust the whois opt-out - by running a business from the site, you don't qualify) but Nominet want money to change the registrant's name.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

I've actually been estranged with my family of origin for years. They're abusive people and in the past I to call the police because of their stalkerish behviour once I'd decided I no longer wanted to communicate with them. Now I'm fearing they might try to contact me again, which I don't want. I know they're searching for me on google.

Anyway, I guess I'll have to be buddha and live with the fact that that WHOIS is now into google.

SW5, do you have any idea how much money Nominet want to change the registrat's name?

I had a similar issue with my original tantric massage site -  some other nasty people (can't remember the name) picking up whois details and putting on their directory, and there is nothing at all that you can do to get it removed, because the the people who own the website are impossible to contact :(

I just had to close my site and write another one

I've done another search on google for my real name and town and now the bloody WHOIS page appears as the first result!

I've contacted Nominet asking them to change the name under which the domain's registered to my escort name explaining that "Due to the nature of the website (escort) I need to change the registrant name to protect my personal life and privacy". Let's see if they're kind to do it!

Hi

So sorry to hear what you have gone through.  Nominet cannot change the name for the reasons you have given (trust me I tried) now I just have mine listed with my webdesigner.  I suggest you ask a friend you trust to take over the name, make up a contract with them so that you still own the website, and then you do an online transfer of the domain name to your friend, it costs about ?10, they get sent a link, add their details, and voila a different name will appear.

Nominet will allow you to change it to Initial & Surname (and you can opt out of the address showing yourself), but if you need more than that the only way is getting it to be hosted by someone else.  Alternatively change your website domain name to something that is not a .co.uk

Good luck x

I had an old school friend find out, who sent links to my AW profile and website to my entire family. It was horrendous, but very emotionally damaging. :-[ There are some really really nasty people about...

Sorry to hear of your plight.  At least you're not in touch with your family and I take it they can't contact you.  Just grit your teeth and try to be positive.  Good luck.  Hope they do not harrass you

Nominet have replied: inded, not only they have not approved the change of name, but thay have also opted in my details, which means that my address too is now exposed.

You need to get a .com domain with private registration and use that instead; it costs a few pounds extra but is the best way to hide your details. It's a pain to update all your advertising (and there will still doubtless be calls and emails from clients 'helpfully' informing you that they can't get to your website through the old link for bloody yonks) but as it's all in aid of keeping your details private in future, it really is worth it.

I'm sorry Nominet couldn't be a bit more supportive and understanding, though. :(

Nominet have accepted to change my name to the first name initial and surname. Once google updates its cache that should do I hope. The addess field can be updated to whatever and doesn't require their approval, however they phoned me up to ask if the new address was really an address I can be reached on. I replied that "it's a friend's address" and they said "ok".
