I have a ring valued and certified for insurance reasons at over ?1000, I can't get any jeweller interested in buying it. Cash converters would give me a nominal amount. A client has offered me a necklace for an overnight, it is very beautiful however I've no way of knowing whether he bought it for ?1000 or ?10.

I would not go to the cash converters to get it checked. I would go to a proper jewelers those fancy ones who know what they are on about. Sometimes cash converters don't always give the correct evaluation.

And as I've posted a valuation is quite different to what they'll give you for it.

Valuation = what it'd cost you to buy another one at retail.

Value to a jeweller or pawnbroker = a small fraction of that. (And they probably charged for the certified valuation.)

It's much easier to say that you don't buy second-hand rings etc than to say 'actually, the markup on the stuff we sell is huuuge and hence the real value of the thing you paid us /someone lots for is low'.

If you'd buy the necklace if you had ?1,000 or ?100 or ?10 cash in your hand, that what it's worth that to you.

Lol what? So he came knowing full well he has no money and gave you a ring as guarantee he will pay? I'm sorry but this shit makes no sense to me darling. And yes, unlike you, I have lost hope in all men. Especially clients, I don't trust them at all. Even if I've seen them before, even if they are a regular. Money first always and that is gbp cash. I don't accept payments or deposits of any other kind. I know of one client who gets lots of fake designer bags and expensive makeup and gives to girls. You have no way of knowing how much the ring is worth by just looking at it. So what if he says it worth a lot? These men do lie you know. Bit of a risky move I would say. Sounds like the scam mentioned above. Can't pay in cash but can pay with (fake) designer bag.  ::) I can buy a nice expensive looking ring on eBay for a fiver. I'm curious to know if he gave you the ring before or after the booking? I hope it works out for you though.

I think it's silly to accept a ring or anything like that for a booking. That ring could be worth very little for all you know, as someone else said it could also be stolen.

I wouldn't dream of accepting anything other than cash for a booking, I think anyone who offers anything other than cash is dodgy and probably has a hidden agenda or is up to something. I once had a text from a potential client offering a Gucci bag in exchange for my services, in his dreams! Surely if he had the cash to pay for the booking he would've just paid it? Sounds very very dodgy to me!

I totally agree some men who do that take the piss. I had one guy say to me (babes I have all this coke - I said babes I don't deposit coke in the bank nor pay my landlord in coke.) Sorry gone off radar but guys who turn up knowing full well what your rate is then do such scams thinking they can get away with it. peeve me off.  :FF I hope he does pay you when you do see him that is if he does turn up. fingers crossed.

There's no way I would take any payment or deposit from a client different then notes (and double check that they are real). How comes a man wearing ring worths over 2k doesn't have money to pay? That's ridicilous. I am sorry , I don't want to be rude but I think you've been badly played and should be less naive xx

Why on Earth would you do a booking without getting the cash in hand first?  ???

It could be any cheap old shite (gold plate, cubic zirconium) and even if it was legitimately valuable you'd only get a fraction of the price if you tried to sell it.

This is wy I asked if he came with the intention to leave the ring, if he did, the chances are the ring is worthless, I couldnt make out if he realsies he didnt have money after service or wanted to extend his time, if he came and said at the beginning I have no moey but will leav my ring as reassurance of payment, I would have told him to leave. I have people texting me asking if I want shoes, handbags all sorts, I always say no, cash only.

At the very least an examination of the hallmark should be possible to see if at least the band is real gold/silver. The stones can be anything which sparkles.

I have sold jewellery before (which belonged to me though) and never been asked for proof it belongs to me but also only received a tiny fraction of it's value.

Even real gold or silver is worth very little.

I have a hard time detecting fake notes, let alone fake gold, I am clueless when it comes to jewellery
