Escorting in USA vs. UK
« on: 15 March 2010, 01:42:10 am »
What are the main differences between being an escort in the US and being one in the UK? Is it considerably more dangerous working in the states? I am considering a move to Los Angeles where I want to study and escort on the side. I would think the escorting scene is a whole other beast there. You would be competing against real top-cheese porn stars and the most beautiful women in the world (it is Hollywood after all). In terms of safety I do worry because the one American escort I know ... she carries a gun and a knife in her purse to see her clients... just as a precaution!  :o And she lives in West Virginia, not LA. I don't even think she's being paranoid... the few times I visited the states, I really felt like I had to be more on my guard wherever I went... there is just that atmosphere there. Everything in the states is so cutthroat and dog-eat-dog. You really have to hustle to stay competitive if you know what I mean. (Just fyi - I'm from Canada, but it's still obviously not the same. Things tend to be a lot more low-key and peaceful in Canada) Also, would it be a lot harder to get clients if you aren't some blond model-esque goddess? Because I don't fit that mold at all: I'm 5'2, Asian, and pale skinned. The one positive thing is there ARE lots of Asians in California. I have little desire to get plastic implants and don a fake tan ... but is that what is required to make it there?

I know this is a UK board so probably not the best place to ask, but I don't know of any other place where escorts gather! If there is anyone here who has worked in both countries please I would like to hear what you have to say.

Thanks very much in advance!

One big difference is that Escorting in the US is against the law, and can if caught land you into jail. My guess is that as a foreign citizen you might get deported instead.

Not that it stops Escorts from operating. But I'm sure they have to be careful about implying they are selling sex for money. As undercover cops sometimes pose as clients and will try to make you agree to "sex for money". As once you agree to it, they have an excuse to arrest you. So my guess is that genuine clients would never use words like that, and when advertising you'd really need to stress that "payment is for my time and companionship only..." etc.

Hopefully though, you'd get more inside info from US based Escorts. If not, try to google sex worker organisations in US for the area you were thinking of moving to.

Thanks SnakeLady! As if escorting isn't inherently dangerous enough... now we have to throw the illegality of it all into the mix... that makes for a very stressful situation indeed. I suppose I could go back north to work for a few months and then return for school. But that is certainly not ideal.

I'm sure there are ladies here who do touring in the states who could also offer their opinions?

hey pixie, I'm just starting off in the States.  I'm over on the East Coast so the dynamic is completely different. I'm getting the escorting ball rolling so I will update you on how it goes. My suggestion is check out your competition! thats the best way to start. Check out LA girls and more specifically Asian escorts. The more you can find out about them the better. Watch to see who seems more successful. As Joey has said there's a niche for everyone. I'm black, dark nearly 5'10 and thin-- you petite and pale and Asian. I'm SURE you can make it work.

Not sure if your going indie, but yes there's a few things you have to be aware of in terms of security, and illegality. But in America's its all about words and how you use them. You're a just a girl charging for time and companionship!  ;) ;)

be safe! pm me and let me know how it goes!

Exactly...in addition, don't go running to where your competition is. Just because they are succesful doesnt mean you will! There's a reason why they are succesful  :P

Your question is a bit more specific. You aren't just asking about US vs UK escorts...you are asking about working in L.A. - Big cities can be tricky. There's more competition, and IMO it takes longer to get established. However, I cant speak for you because you are an Asian female. You tend to have White, Black, AND other Asian males after you. As a Black male myself...my niche is a bit more narrowed, but that just means I cant just go anywhere and work, I have to go to the right places.

No offense, but that bitch is crazy! I used to think about carrying guns and knives, but after over 2 years in the industry...that is just overboard, unless she is working on the streets!

Majority of clients are harmless...and to carry a gun and knife to every booking...I just couldnt be bothered. Besides, if she ends up shooting or stabbing some man because she felt threatened...thats far worse than being caught for prostitution. Has she ever heard of 10-20-Life?

Good lord I would be more worried in WV, of getting shot for going to the wrong address by mistake. I had forgotten how crazy those people are up there. I am still waiting for both of you two young things to realize Europe is WAY better in terms of escorting. :D

I want to get out there myself this year...However, it just seems such a leap! I travel solo, but to go overseas is something I havent quite worked up. In additon, Flight tickets roundtrip to Heathrowe is over $700.

But really, the states arent that bad! People are making it seem like every other client is Vice, and every other client after that is a murdered  :P

MM, I know you are hon. I will be waiting, don't worry. AJ, you are hopeless! Don't fly to Heathrow, try looking at AMS, Schipol, it is a hub like Heathrow, and sometimes the tickets can be cheaper, also the flight shorter depending on where you are traveling from. If in Florida, you can take Martinair from Orlando to Amsterdam. Martinair is the 'Other Dutch Airline'. Direct flight, as opposed to transferring in Detroit if taking KLM.

Escorting in the U.S.A is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay safer than in Canada.  For one thing, Americans know very well that full legal names and references are required if you want to see anyone worthwhile.  No one I know goes into an appointment blind, they know exactly who they're going to see.

Actually, I don't really have a second point.  For me, the background checks are the  main thing to give me peace of mind.

The gun thing made me laugh though. You  must know Americans are paranoid. They think the bogeyman's around every corner trying to rape, maim, kill or rob them.
