HIV test at doctors?
« on: 25 July 2011, 01:07:18 am »
Cut a long story short, last year my doctor sent me for some blood tests as she suspected I might be diabetic and that come back OK but my liver function test was slightly abnormal and after that I was routinely tested on my liver and I even went to the hospital for an ultrasound and that come back normal.
Was checked for  hepatitis B and C infections [very reluctant to do this] , and again all negative.

Since my liver enzymes are still high the doctor wants to refer me to a specialist for a liver biopsy and wants me to repeat all my blood work and this time test me for HIV.

I am abit reluctant to do this, [as I get all my STD inc HIV checked at my local GUM clinic every 2 months under a fake name] as I have heard that this goes on your record and can effect getting insurance and getting a mortgage etc, does anybody know if this is true?

I dont know what to do, as this whole thing is stressing me out big time, and to the point where every client I see I am petrified that the condom will split or something, and im scared that if I refuse the HIV test at the dcotor they might think I have it, or something and I really wouldnt feel comfortable telling my doctor I am an escort as again I wouldnt want that going on my record either.

Advice much appriciated xxx

Have you not told the doctor you've been tested at the GUM clinic? I appreciate you'll have your reasons to keep work total secret but this is a time when you should be more open with the doctor. You can stress you want it private but if you are getting reg HIV at the GUM clinic that may be all they need. I'm sure your doctor will appreciate the sensitivity of your situation and be able to liaise with the GUM clinic. X

The more they know the more the can rule out etc X

The THT website should have the details, but the insurance industry was made to agree a few years ago that merely testing for HIV would not be used as an excuse for declining to cover someone or charging them more. The questions insurers can ask in relation to HIV risk are also quite tightly restricted.

Having said that, I wouldn't do an HIV test at my GP's just in case it came back positive, so yes, I'd go 'I tested within the past two months (i.e. long after the issue with your liver started) and I'm HIV-'.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."
