Domain name Question
« on: 20 May 2011, 08:18:04 pm »
I did a search already and couldnt find this particular topic so here goes

I was looking at domain names for my future website and I punched in a few possible names.  In two that I fancied, the .com is taken but the .co.uk is available.  In once case the .com is of a professional and completely unrelated to escorting website and the other it just leads to nothing ( although I didnt see it for sale as is sometimes the case when a domain name isnt in use isnt it?)

My question is, is it ok to just take the .co.uk domain name for my site, even if the .com name is in use for something or somebody else in an unrelated field?

I dont see anything worng with it, they may not be uk based so no use to them and it serves them right for not buying it themselves.

Yes its common for bought domains not being used, I have another business and currently have 6 domains purely so no one else gets them lol

You're completely entitled to register it. The only thing really is that it's good to have the .com so that if someone types that instead they'll still get to your site.

Me too - I wanted to register the .com of my website name (which is a .co.uk one) and was furious when I found it had been bought already by some firm in China - when I emailed to find out why, and what they intended doing with it I got a reply that said it was soon to be used for a clothing line (and to be fair, the guy sounded a bit surprised when he'd looked at my site  ;D). After this I bought both the .com and the .co.uk of my full work name justin case, and I suspect lots of people do it.

It's not expensive and as Friday says, even if you do nothing but buy the domains and forget all about it, it stops other people using them.
