Does this seem like a scam!?
« on: 10 November 2012, 03:25:10 pm »
Hi ladies. I am an overly mistrusting person when it comes to this industry. The other day I got a message on AW from a man claiming to be a man doing some "directing marketing" in a one off for this website: http://www.sponsorascholar.co.uk/ I was like "I call bullshit" at first but part of me wants to believe it's not too good to be true.

Essentially what they offer is up to ?15k a year for students with 2-4 sexual meet ups with your sponsor a term (which is like 12 a year...)

Has anyone heard of the SponsorAScholar scheme? Or knows someone who has done it? The issues I have with it from my first look about are 1: You meet someone in a hotel room for the "interview" 2. You have to give out details of ID and show your uni ID and 3. The client pays the company before seeing you then after you've met with them you get the money...

Kitty, anyone who asks for 'ID' of 'real name' I am very suspicious of.  No one in their right mind would give this info out.

As for the 'interview' that screams red flag to me and also screams 'free shag' for the interviewer.

There was something similar to this posted lately but I cant remember the title or I would link it, but basically the girl was scammed into doing an overnight and when she went to get money next day there was no money to be got.  Now I cant honestly remember how it went but the guy definitely got a night of free sex as the girl did not receive the payment for her overnight.

So unless you have money in YOUR hand for booking you are going to do, then the answer to your question is YES, this is most definitely a scam.  No matter how they dress it up.

Beauty is nothing to do with having a pretty face.
It is about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart,
And most importantly a beautiful soul.

Yeah I definitely thought the same in regards to the 'free shag' as this is something people have issues with when going to agencies interviews from what's been said on here. I guess for the price of the website and the ???s he is saving in WG fees then he's probably successfully scamming some poor naive students. Thanks for your input :)

SPONSOR A SCHOLAR? Oh my God, please forgive the all-caps but I am slightly amazed at the absurdity of this "rebranding" of the age old shag-me-now-I'll-pay-you-later-honest scam!

(And, ugh, after actually looking at the website I feel pretty icky. "HMRC treat scholarships as a legitimate and deductable business expense so if own your own business, all scholarship contributions to Sponsor A Scholar UK can be made by your company and are free of corporation and income tax"? WHO WROTE THIS NONSENSE? Oh my goodness gracious god almighty.)

I love the way that the students are 'vetted' to make sure that they are not already - horrors - prostitutes, and the way that those wanting to shag someone (but only one) have to pay upfront to this site.

The FAQ is great: you can take a friend along to the interview venue, but they will have to leave for the actual, cough, thing.

It's almost got me wanting to ring up HMR&C to see what they say.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

Yes, it's a pretty good upgrade of the Nigerian scam (I'm an African king please help me to get the money out of my country bla bla..)

The company number they give (he gives?) in the Terms and Conditions is real...

... in the sense that it's the one for

MATCH.COM INTERNATIONAL LIMITED
THE COMMUNICATIONS BUILDING
48 LEICESTER SQUARE
LONDON
WC2H 7LT
Company No. 04791534

I did wonder where some of the T&C had been lifted from - it looks like a couple of the odder sections came from match.com.

I'm sure they have some good lawyers. If they had any way to contact them on their website, I might even tell them about this.

I think it's an offence to pretend to be a company when you're not - it's certainly naughty to say someone else's VAT registration number is yours.

Oh my God, look at his smug face! I do indeed hope he's enjoying his little moment of fame there. Con artists' sense of superiority [until they get caught] is literally the most nauseating thing.

When a male reporter approached the site as a potential sponsor, however, he was told there was a ?waiting list? and would be contacted in the new year

That just did my day.  But the indo journos are not that good at detective work, they could have just followed the guy (without being noticed) to his flat (he lived around the corner). And once you know his address it's not that hard to find his name.

Do you still have the message Kitty? I'm guessing the profile will have been pulled already but the Independent may be interested in any information that can be gleamed!

Hello dear Independent journalists,

Lovely story, but the Q&A contains a couple of errors which you might want to correct:

Quote
Q. Is it illegal to run a website where men or women appear to provide sex for money?

A. This is a grey area. Owners can be arrested for controlling prostitution if the police can show that sexual services are being given in exchange for cash. But this is often very difficult.

As just the offer to be sexual with someone for money is enough to make someone a prostitute, it is screamingly obvious that, if any real sponsors existed then

a) he's doing enough to count as control, and

b) he's gaining from it - sponsors pay some up front money to him.

Even in the quite likely event that there aren't any, there's "Causing or inciting prostitution for gain": getting people to offer to have sex for money in expectation of gain for himself or someone else. As gain includes getting a discount, the freebies he's been having or hoping to have would count.

Quote
Operators can say the sex is a private contract between the client and the sex worker. On the SponsorAScholar.co.uk website the extensive terms and conditions describe an agreement which covers time and companionship together.

They can, but when it's obvious to everyone that prostitution is involved, it doesn't do them any good. The usual way they do this is via promoting 'field reviews' or similar, but this site made it blatantly clear that it was sex-for-money for everyone except him.

Quote
Q. Is it illegal to advertise sexual services on the internet?

A. Yes.

No, it's not in the UK.

You might want to make a donation towards the costs of running this site too, especially if you got stuff from here. It is easily the oldest source for the info that he stole the company details of match.com, for example. Just saying...
