Title: Do you ever cancel last minute?
Post by: Jessiegirl on 05 August 2020, 04:35:59 pm
I just wondered if anyone cancels last minute or its just me.

I have done this to a regular a few times and he has been fine about it previously especially if I was feeling ill. However our latest booking I overslept and said sorry and had to cancel last minute.

He was ok at first but now pissed off and asking for a discount for next time.

Just would appreciate your advice as feel bad about it now.

I think I have a couple of times. Once I was paranoid and thought I was being watched. The other time i was feeling ill and decided it was best not to go ahead. I try not to cancel but occasionally things come up.

If you have done it several times I am not surprised he is feeling pissed off.

My advice is make sure you stick to bookings, if there's a chance you cannot then do not accept.

Many years ago I was unreliable for a particular reason absolutely hated it, I fixed the particular reason which was not easy but I did it and now there has to be the end of the World (or close to it) for me to ever cancel.

Not last minute, no. If you know there's a danger of you oversleeping set an alarm? I just know how pissed off I am if other business people cancel or are late for appointments for me, and I don't see why we should be any different.

No I don't cancell last minute, I want their money in my paws. And feel it's not a very nice thing to do. I don't see the discount as unreasonable at all, as you repeatedly wasted his time. I've offered them ocassionally and don't feel disempowered or resentful. Or any less of a business owner, it's win win. If you don't like the idea or you've lost motivation or respect for this client (for some reason) I'd set him free so another SW benefits.

I have cancelled quite a few times due to my health but me personally I wouldn’t give a discount.. but that’s just me. Also I’d find it cheeky for someone to ask, if I’d ever want to give a discount then it’s because I want to not Because they asked/ expected it

You are human.. don’t be hard on yourself
I had a lovely client who’s been trying to book me for weeks but I’ve been cancelling / re arranging or not working and when I felt too tired he reminded me by telling me ‘it’s okay you’re only human’  I needed that reminder :). X

It would have to be an extreme circumstance for me to cancel last min, like sudden onset of illness or a family or household emergency, as I know how much I hate being let down last min.
I could see how he'd be pissed off if you've done it a few times and it would be a gesture of goodwill to offer him a small discount but as others have said, I don't like it when clients ask for or expect one.
Better to have happy and returning clients than disgruntled ones who may feel the need to spread the word.

I only cancelled last minute as I had overslept and would not have been ready in time. Anyway I've offered a discount as felt bad about it. I think part of me got complacent with him as  i know he will always be back for more and known him a while now.

He hasn't responded about the discount so hope i haven't lost him now.

I try not to cancel last minute as it's not nice when done to us. But if something important has come up or suddenly ill then yes, but i try not to.

I think he probably got pissed off because you told him you overslept! As you say he's been accepting on other occasions when you were ill, but not bothering to set your alarm is something else. It does sound like you can't be arsed and that's why he's feeling taken advantage of.

Did he come back?

Yes although I explained I've been having some personal problems hence why I overslept and forgot to set my alarm.

You sound very much like me! I have done this a few times, cancelled because I couldn’t be arssed and I’ve slept in, and I always give them a discount to make up for it and a wee extra 15 mins, it keeps them happy!

When I’m trying to “comp” someone for my screw up, I might offer extra time, but never a lower price.

You give a little time for wasting their time- you want to act as though you’re their equal or better, and not risk getting discount associated with you in their mind.

I very rarely do this but had to do it just last week, 20 minutes before my booking, because I got a blinding mingraine then vomitted from it.

I dont think the guy believed me, but I explained what happened and asked to reschedule as I simply wouldn't be able to give 100%. He hasnt rescheduled, but oh well, gping through with it wpyld have been absolute torture.

Sometimes it's a lose / lose situation. Cancel, the client gets pissed off so he wont rebook. See the client although not 100%, he gets a substandard service and doesnt rebook.

What can you do?!

Yes I have, genuine child care reasons, apologised, not much more I can do, they don’t need to know the ins & outs of my life. It happens occasionally, not very often.  I don’t like doing it, as don’t like it done to me, but when I have, punters have been ok so they say..who knows... ::). They probably don’t believe us like we don’t believe them...
